AUCKLAND, June 0. A sad accident occurred on Saturday evening, by which George Ritchie, solicitor, of the firm of Bevcridge and Ritchie, was thrown from his horse, Death was instantaneous. An inquest was held yesterday, and a verdict of accidental death returned. There \u>s an immense funeral to-day. The Indus!ty, schooner, was wrecked at the Waikato Heads yesterday. On Monday a child of Mr Grove, M P.C., was killed on a tramway at the Thames. The ship Aloxandrina arrived on Saturday, 114 days, from London. She encountered fearful gales on this side of the equator. A heavy sea broke on board, doiug immense damage, and killing J. Moore, the chief steward, and Edward Dale, an apprentice. The James Paterson arrived from Byd ney yesterday. 80,000 ounces of gold have been received from the Thames during the last fortnight. The Caledonian is looking as well as ever. Shares are standing at £176 ; Thames, £36 ; Cures, 25s ; Junction, 555; Alburnh, £l4. The latter has every appearance of turning out a second Caledonian. It is taking out a large quantity of specimens, which are very rich. The Tokatea and other claims at Coromandel are also very rich. June 10. The share market closed brisk— Caledonians, £175 ; Thames Gold Mining, £36; Tookeys, £2O;- and is expected to cut the Caledonian's reef in a few weeks; Nonpareils, £5 10s ; Aiburnia, £l4; Central Italy. 35s ; Moanatairis, £4 ; Junction, £3 ; Cures, 255, Kuranuis, £3 ; Poveity and Charleston.£6; Prince Imperial, £4 10s; Imperial Crown, £6 ; Bed Queens, 8s ; Inverness, 345. 11th June. At. the Supreme Court, _ Captain William Percival, charged with wilful and cortupt perjury between himself and the Bank of New Zealand, was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment and hard labor. A subscription was raised to convey his wife and family to England. Margaret M'Carthy, a child eight months old, was drowned in a tub on the 7th inst. During the past two months 85,000 ounces of gold have been received from the Thames. During a heavy gale at the Thames on Wednesday, a boatman was drowned. Several Auckland merchants had a narrow escape, having been picked up by the steamer Lady Bowen after being several hours in an open boat. The Caledonian is still turning out well ; another dividend declared of £l2 to-day; Thames, £2. The next fortnight's yield is expected to be 20,000 ounces. Other claims are turning out well. Alburnia's are selling at £l4. TAURANGA, June 1L The native lost in the bush was found after 15 days' absence. Whilst aiming a blow at a pig he cut his own leg, disabling himself. He crept to an old plantation, and subsisted on raw potatoes. Wellington arrived at 7 this morning; and left at 0 for Aucklaud. The Tauranga, schooner, brings the following news : ■, ITarley, charged under the Arms Act, was found guilty; sentence deferred. Chief Justice Arney raised a point of law, which will materially effect the present and other cases under the Arms Act; whether prisoner could be convicted under the indictment, as the oct of 1860 had repealed, and no revival of section of act 1860 as it originally stood ; point reserved for decision of next Appeal Court.
The Caledonian Gold Mining Comnany held a meeting on Saturday last, and" declared a dividend for the last fortnight of £l2 per share. Total paid in dividends since Febiuary £343,200. The Thames Investment Company paid a dividend of £2 per share. . Thames news is satisfactory up to Saturday. Very rich specimens have been obtained from the Una mine.

NAPIER, June 9.
In the Besidcnt Magistrate's Court to-duy, William Hawker, convicted of having in his possession an illicit still at Wharepanga, was sentenced to six months' hard labor. During the case counsel required the production of the still, which had been deposited in the Customs shed. Th'e Customs officer this morning found the shed broken open and the still stolen. The body of the still was afterwards found in the harbor. The other parts are still missing.
DUNEDIN, June 9
The following resolution was passed last night in the Provincial Council : "That, having considered the Colonial Secretary's communication contained in the message, this Council acquiesces in the construction of the railway from Dunedin to Clutha, so far as progress made, and requests that the Colonial Government will continue its construction, and complete it at the earliest possible time ; and also will take all necessary steps to obtain the concurrence of the Governor, and sanction of the Assembly, to the immediate construction of the following lines of railway in terms of the Immigration and Public Works' Act, 1870, namely—lnvercargill to Mataura—Division, 29 to 9 ; 2. Waitaki to Moeraki, and thence to Waikouaiti, unanimous ; 3. Tokomairiro to Tuapeka, unanimous; 4. Mosgiel to Outran) —division called, but it was carried on the voices with locked doors; 5. Winton to Kingston, unanimous; and 6. Balclutha to,. Mataura, unanimous. Ministers must deem this reversal of the resolution of last Council a great triumph to their policy. June 12. The desirability of the University Councils amalgamating has been affirmed by both, provided- the Otago University retains full control over present and future endowments; the members of its counoil to be constituted a corporation, and the local administration of its affairs entrusted to it, but power of conferring degrees to rest solely in the Colonial University ; Otago professors to form part of a board of examiners.
The University Committee agree to admit affiliated colleges on giving satisfactory education in three of the undermentioned branches, viz., mathematical, classics, modern languages, physical sciences, English. language, literature, and history, and recommends apportionment of £IO,OOO into scholarships for the above subjects ; one scholarship for each subject to the value of £7O ; for each of the remainder £45, and £ISOO towards the support of the affiliated colleges. A woman, named M'Donald, in an altercation with her husband, atMangatiea, threw a pitchfork at him, which entered his side. Little hopes are entertained of his recovery. She has been arrested. June 13. A fire occurred at 2 o'clock this morning at Reichehlt's Fancy Warehouse, Princes street, and took a fair hold of the shop and City Buffet, adjoining, before the Brigade could get to work ; but was immediately subdued on the application of water. Reicheldt is insured in the New Zealand for £ISOO. The stock and premises were totally destroyed, as is the Buffet, which was insured; the loss to Allen, proprietor, is £9OO. Reicheldt is in custody, on suspicion of arson ; evidence strong. He admits setting fire, but through pure accident. MELBOURNE, June 8. Breadstuffs have been firm since the arrival of the Californian mail. Flour, for trade demand, is £l6 10s to £l6 15s ; New Zealand wheat, medium sample, 6s 2d, accepted ;.
