Protection. —As an instance of what may ensue from a fluctuating tariff, a Melbourne paper mentions that as the operators engaged in the manufacture of tobacco and cigars are petitioning that as many of them are married men with large families, should the alteration in the duty of leaf tobacco now proposed be carried into effect, they and their families will be thrown into poverty and distress from their ignorance of other mechanical trades, and from the graet scarcity of employment in Victoria at present. Skin Grafting.— The operation of skin grafting first introduced into British surgery by Mr Pollock, of St. George’s Hospital, Hyde Park corner, has been attempted on a gii’l at the Industrial School, Geelong, who has been suffering from an ulcer which was eating its way towards an important artery. The operation was performed by transplanting a piece of healthy-skin (says the “Express”) from the inner side of the arm to the surface of the sore.
