An Unusual Maeeiage. —A Lawrence (Otago) correspondent writes :—A marriage was celebrated here this week. The united ages of the happy couple considerably exceeds 120 years —bless their young hearts. After this, many a spinster who may have suffered the hope deferred will take heart and Binile again —dum spero spiro. Deowned. —The “ Wanganui Chronicle” of May 31 gives the following sad particulars of the death of aseaman named Angus M'Donald, who for a long while sailed out of this port, where he had many friends, and a large number of acquaintances. He was a powerful young man, apparently about 30 years of age. About half-past 11 on Monday night, deceased, who was second mate of the Wallibi, was on the fore boom, taking in a reef, the vessel rolling heavily at the time. The sheet not being taut at the time, the boom was allowed to swing, and he was jerked off. The man at the wheel saw McDonald, as he swept past, and immediately put the helm round and gave the alarm* The steamer was stopped at once and put about, and the boat was lowered, even before the vessel was well round, but the heavy sea and the dark night rendered all search unavailing. It was kept up for fully half-an-hour, and only given up when all hope of success became utterly vain. The deceased was well known, and bad many friends in Wanganui. He worked at the Bridge before joining the Wallabi. His death is much regretted by all bis acquaintances.
