THE CENSUS RETURNS.
The census returns, which we publish to-day, show that (exclusive of the Armed Constabulary stationed m Wellington) there has been an increase since the date of the last census (December 19, 1867) of 1950 persons in the population of the province, which is equal to 8.88, or nearly 9 per cent, in about three years and two months. The increase in the city of Wellington in the same time has been (excluding the Armed Constabulary) 301 persons, or almost 4 per cent. Wairarapa has increased by 502 persons, being 16*36, or a little more than 16 per cent, and Wanganui has increased by 538 persons, or nearly 14 per cent. The Hutt has decreased by 32 persons, equal to nearly 2 per cent. The boundaries of the other districts having been altered by the act of last session, they cannot be separately compared; but unitedly the country districts, Manawatu and Rangitikei, show an increase over the former Porirua #nd Rangitikei districts of 644 persons, or rather more than 12 per cent. These variations show that there have been emigrations from some parts of the province to other parts of it, and indicate a further occupation of the country; but, on the whole, the increase is hardly as much as should have been caused by the ordinary excess of births over deaths, which was 675 in 1868 and 701 in 1869. Province or Wellington, 1871.
Totals for the province 12,401 9,549 21,950 on board ships in harbor. fThese now form the three districts .of country districts, Manawatu and Rangitikei.
