After the Americans. —We understand that up to the present time the Waste Land Board,Otago, has received eighteen applications for grants of land for the purpose of planting forest trees, on the terms recently offered by the Provincial Government. The area thus applied for is 2229 acres. Three requests for additional information the matter have also been received by the Board. Acclimatisation. —At a meeting of the Council of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society recently, attention was called to the fact that Californian and Australian quail, which the Society have recently introduced into the province, have in some instances been shot during the present reason. These birds subsist almost solely on slugs and insects; and, as they have not multiplied sufficiently to afford fair game for the sportsman, it is a disgrace that their extermination should be risked by a ruthless destruction this season.
