MINING NEWS.

A correspondent of the “Cross,” under date 18th, writes from the Thames:—

Queen of Sheba. —Better stone has not been taken out of the mine for a long time past, and, what is more noticeable, it comes from the lower level, 110 ft, below the surface of Grahamstown Flat, where the reef is improving in quality and size, its thickness being two feet on an average.

Southern Pacific. —A 12-ton lot of stone gave 470 z. 12dwt. of smelted gold. Point Russell. —The low-level drive from the Tulip Claim, that has been recently purchased by the company, has broken through into the old workings of of the mine, where stone worth from 3oz. to 4oz. to the ton was taken out some fifteen months ago. Only a small section of of the lode was then worked, and reasonable hopes are therefore en. tertained that good stuff will be forthcoming when the vein there is again taken in hand. This will he in a day or two, and by the end of next week at farthest a trial crushing is expected to be ready for the mill.

Dauntless and Sink -to • Rise.— Another crushing for this company was finished to-day at the Tramway machine, and gave 114 oz. lldwt. of melted gold. Inverness. —Both of the tribute parties who are working this mine commenced crushing to-day at Goodall’s machine. One of them (Schofield and party) have a very superior parcel of stone out, besides a lot of specimens. Between 501 b. and 601 b. weight of the latter were broken out of the leader yesterday and to-day.
