The second meeting of the North Albertland Mutual Improvement Society was held in the Public Hall on Saturday, May 26th, when a paper was read by Mr. VV. H. Wharfe, entitled Is Marriage a Failure?" The paper was written iu a masterly style, and treated upon many points of interest. There were some very good criticisms from a mixed audience. Mr._ Wharfe replied, and succeeded in proving to the satisfaction of all present that marriage was a failure. A great many of the members seemed to be of the same opinion, as the musical and other contributions rendered were very suggestive if not appropriate. Mr. W. Smith sang "I Wish I Was Single Again Mr. G. Farrand recited "I am Not a Single Man;" Miss S. Powell sang "Just Before the Wedding, Mother;" Mr. J. Ward recited "I Can't Make up My Mind;" Miss E. Latchmore sang " Polly, the Cows are in the Corn Mr. J. Powell recited "The Way to Woo." The accompaniments were played in a finished style by Miss M. Wharfe. A committee meeting was called immediately after the close of the ordinary one to decide upon the adoption of rules and by-laws used by the defunct Wellsford Society. These were adopted, and the society now stands in a much firmer position than formerly, as its roll now registers 27 names. The attendance was the best we have had so far, there being 50 present. This augurs well for the future of a society so young.[A Correspondent.!
