By the Free Lance Special Correspondent. MATCH v. GLOUCESTER CITY, Thursday, October 19th.
Great iuteiiest wab taken m this match, and the rather limited accommodation of the ground! was taxed to the uttermost. A number of excursions were run from Wales, and a big Welsh contingent, including the whole of the vv'elsh Rugby Union Committee, were present: New Zealand team: Full, Gillett; three-quarters Smith, Deans, Wallace, five-eighths, Hunter, Stead; half, Roberts; forwards, Glasgow, Glenn, Cunningham, Nicholson, O'Sullivan, Seeling, Johnston, and 1 Gallaher. Referee, Mr. F. Nicholls, Midlandl Counties. This was a hard game right through, and in the eaxlier stages gave promise of providing a close contest. The Home backs tackled better than, any previous set we have met, and' our "msides" were stopped time and again, and in vigorous fashion, too, m their attempts to break through. After about twenty minutes' play, Hudson (one of Gloucester's wing threequarters) was slightly stunned as the result of a tackle by Gillett, and) had to leave the ground for a time. Shortly after this, our first soore came from a line-out — Glasgow to Roberts to Hunter, and Wallace goaled. In the interval, before half-time, five more tries were piled l on, two being converted. Half-time score, 26 to nil. The early part of the second spell was, to an extent, a repetition of the first half. New Zealand attacked freely nearly all the time, but, although often close to scoring, did not actually do so until twenty-five minutes had elapsed. At this stage, Scott (Gloucester half) left the field, having twisted his knee. Hudson had resumed after the interval. In the concluding stages of the game four more tries were secured, and 1 three converted, bringing the score up to 44 points to nil. The points were secured as follows : — 1, from line out, Glasgow, Roberts, Hunter try, Wallace goaled, 5 points; 2, from seruinj Roberts, Deans, Smith try, Wallace failed, 3 ; 3, from line out, Nicholson, Roberts, Stead, Hunter, Deans try, Wallace failed, 3; 4, from loose play near line, Glasgow try, Wallace converted, 5 ; 5, from scrum, Roberts, Stead, Hunter, Deans, Wallace try, Wallace converted, 5; 6, passing run ended in Smith being pushed into touch, threw in instantly to Hunter, try, Giaett converted!, 5; 7, from scrum, Roberts, Stead, Hunter, Deans try, Wallace converted, 5 ; 8, from scrum, Roberts, Hunter, Wallace try, Wallace converted, 5 ; 9, from line-out, Cunningham, Hunter, Stead, Seeling try, Wallace failed, 3; 10, from scrum Roberts broke through and kicked across, Deans securing try, Wallace converted 1 5; total, 44 points. Gillett was in great form at fullback, tackling solidly, and! displaying excellent judgment in use of the touchline. He also kicked a splendid goal from a very difficult angle. Wallace was very prominent in this game. He made a number of very fine runs, notably the one which culminated in the fifth try. Deans, at centre, also played finely, and Hunter, Stead and Roberts were a 1 ! in their best form. The forwards were matched against a very solid, hard-working set, and came out of the ordeal with considerable credit to themselves.
