THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT'S STOMACH. Should King Dick Jump On It ?
WHAT a rude person Lord Ripon is. He is frightened that the projected Colonial Conference is a scandalous attempt to use the colonial representatives for electioneering purposes. But, what he seems to be scared to death at is that Mr. Seddon will dance on the stomachs of the Government on the subject of Chinese labour. Most of the people m this country will be very anxious for Mr. Seddon, should he attend the proposed Conference, to junrp on the waistcoat of the Government. * * * There seems to be a rooted feeling in England that Mr. Seddon is saving up a torrent of anti-Chinese oratory for that Conference. A while back, Cartoonist Caarruthers Gould pictured Premier Balfour and Prime Minister Seddon on the ends of a telephone. The latter was telling Mr. Balfour that he was going to have spme free and unfettered talk about the Chinese business at that Conference. And why not? And wherefore should his lordship of Ripon fear, unless, of course, he is "m" the Rand mines. ♦ * r Do you believe cables ? We read of constant desertions by the Chinese slaves of the Rand, constant raids on farmers by these slaves, constant killing of Chinamen by the colonists m defence of life and property, and frequent murders by the coolies themselves. It started with the killing of a mine manager. Then, the Kaffirs and coolies fought, and the coolies were worsted. Then, deserters killed farmer Joubert. Then, another farmer killed a few Chinamen Why? Just because people like Lord Ripon favour yellow slavery • * * Maybe those deserting Chinamen were maddened with hunger and illtreatment You cannot blame them so much as you blame the men responsible If there are no politicians m England or m Africa who have the courage to "dance on the stomachs of the Government," and if Mr. Seddon is the only person the proChinamen people of Britain are fearful of, may he do* something to justify their horror at the prospect of his going to England to have "same free and unfettered talk" on the subject. ♦ • • Lord Milner a while ago deprecated "New Zealand poking her long and inquisitive nose" into South African affairs. Lord Milner did not deprecate the action of this colony six years ago to-morrow (Saturday) when New Zealand began to help in the conquest of a white race, believing that Africa was to become a white man's country. Nobody called it inquisitiveness then, and
many called it patriotism. It is patriotism that stirred the Premier of New Zealand to speak of the burning shame of keeping white men out of Africa so that the Randlords living in London might use cheap labour. • * • What care the Randlords for patriotism 1 ? Read the names of some of the Britishers who run the Rand mines — Beit, Neumann, C. Wernher, Michaelis, Mosenthal, Eckstein, Schumacher, L. Reyersbach, A. Reyersbach, and Francois. This is a sample. We don't print the really long ones, because we don't want to worry the linotype man baldheaded. New Zealand helped to win the Rand mines for those men and others, and New Zealand's Premier has the right, that every loyal Briton has to "jump on the stomach" or any other part of any Government that continues to permit the Rand iniquity.
