Hockey.

The Westport Ladies' Hockey Club returned home by th© last trip of the Mapourika, after visiting Grreymouth, Eokitiba, amd Reef ton. They were very fortunate in having beautiful weather nearly the whole of their trip. The first match was played in Greymouth, on the 6th September, in the Park, and there was a great crowd of onlookers. The game was against the G.W.B.C. Club, and resulted in a draw. • • • The second match was in Hokitika, against the Kia Oro A and B team, and a very exciting game took place, the visitors being defeated by one "-oal, which was scored during the last eight

minutes of the game. The following day the High School girls were played, and at half-time no some had been made. The teams were very evenly matched, and the game proved a very fast, and' exciting one. Dining the second spell the school-girls, who have never yet been beaten — not* even had a goal scored against them — gamed tv. o goak. Mr. Wake refereed for the match, and he congratulated' the Westport girls on their play, and general behaviour on the field, far that was the third match they had ever played. * * * On the 12th September, the Reeftom girls were met, and' at half-time no score had been made, but in the wcond spell Miss Geraldin© Bayfield (captain) neatly shot a goal, and the game ended Westpoort 1, Beefton nil. The final match was then played 1 in Greymooith the following day, against tlhe Maiwhera Club. The ground was in a very bad condition, but from the stait Westport had the best of the game, their hitting and passing being very fine. After

about fifteen minutes play, Miss Mary Lucas got the ball, and made a splendid dribbling rush, centred it, and Miss 6. Bayfield shot a goal. • • • In the second spell, the teams were very evenly matched, but in the defence the visitors were much superior, playing with splendid combination. After a good rush down the field, a corner hit was given, and again Miss G. Bayfield was •successful in scoring a spllendid goal from a difficult position, andl the game ended • Westpoxt two goals, Mawhe.ra nil. • * • During the whole of the trip down the coast the hookey playem were very much entertained at socials, picnics, etc , and altogether had 1 a very 'enjoyable holiday. Ini fact, the hospitality was profuse wherever the team went. The Westport team was composed of • Misses Bayfield (2), Simon, Baiilie, Enright, Suasted, Lucas, Scanlon, Powell, Ken*, and Pain ■ emergencies, Missevs Mackenzie and Logic.
