Hockey.

Lasfc Saturday saw the finish of the first round in the senior campetation. The position of the teams is as follows — "Wellington, 4 wans, 1 draw, 9 points ; United', 4 wins, 1 loss, 8 points , Victoria College, 2 wine, 1 loss, 2 draws, 6 points, Karon, 2 wins, 2 losses, 1 draw, 5 points; Vivian, 1 win, 4 losses 2 points, Waiwetu, 4 losses. The Wellington v. Karori game was played on No. 1 ground, at Day's Bay. and l esulted in a win for Wellington by 4 goals to 1. A much closer finish was expected, but the Karori team seems to have lost all its aid dash, and played very poorly. They massed Davies, who is injured, and unable to p]av at present. Both sides seemed to be looking- for fight, and, they got it. There was plenty of blood and language flying about. It is a pity the. Karori men talk such a lot, it spoils the game, and miakes it much harder for the referee. The game was very even for a time, Karori scoring first. Aftei attacking wildly, L. Davies shot a good goal. This woke the Wellington team up, and they quickly transferred the ball to Karori territory. The Karori backs were playing very well, and defended splendidly, but the blues were not to be demied, and Hull scored a fine goal. Migely shortly afterwards found the posts, and halftime sounded with Wellington 2, Karon 1. Immediately on resuming, the Wellington forwards attacked very strongly, and kept doing so for the greater part of the spell. Pope scored the third goal, and Hull the fourth. The game towards the finish was very fierce, and Karori made very determined efforts to score without avail. The Vivians gave the Victoria College team all they wanted on Saturday, the game ending • College 4, Vivian 3. The Vivians had a splendid; chance of making a draw of the game, as towards the finish Hollisi passed right thorough everybody, and 1 only had! to tap the ball to score a goaJ, when he missed it altogether. lam afraid he lost his head. The Vivian team, is improving wonderfully. Day is the bright star of the team, and will very nearly see the reps, this year. Matheson was ailso very sound, but he still undercuts. If the College team wouldl get a little more combination, they would do much better. Skelley is playing well, but hits too hard) when attacking, and does not always hit to a man. It is no good banging the baJl to the side-lines when you have a chance to hit to someone in the vanguard who may do something with it. Goals were scored for College by Beere (2), Oram, and Grower, and for Vivian by Hollis, Thompson, and Forbes 1 . * * * The United team had a day out against Warwetu. and scored fourteen

goals to nil, Elliott 5, Hickson, FitzGerald. and Smybhe 3 each. Waiwetu played two men short. It was amusing to see Ashbolt up in the circle trying to score. He did not do so, and it looked very bad for a man of his reputation to play the fool as he was doing. He should l stick to his place whether the team has a soft game or a hard one. I suppose ho felt cold l and lonely, and wanted a hit. ♦ • In the junior matches, Wellington defeated Thorndon by one goal to nil. I was gladl to see Walter Fell playing again. He is too good a man to lea-ve hockey alone, and will strengthen his team materially. Y.M.O.A. drew with United) — score, two each. This match was played! in a lake, and players needed swimming costume. Victoria College beat Wesley by two goals to one. Third class : — Victoria College A beat Thorndon, Ito 0; Uaited beat Wellington by 3to 0 ; V.M.C.A. beat Victoria College B by 6 to 1. * • * Luckie received rather a nasty thdib playing at Miramax on Saturday. He is still confined to hie room. Cardale, of the Wellington Club, is nearly well again, and' expects to play next week. McLean, who was injured in the Karori — United match, will play again on Saturday. The ladies' clubs are practising very hard this year. Every Saturday tihe Miramar grounds are occupied before tihe men start. (Continued on page 20.)
