A Legislative Oversight.

— Y. E. L.

(For the* Free Lance.) A brilliant thought occurred to me A day or two ago, The origin of which, you see, I'm anxious you should know. The Parliamentary gentlemen Were very smart, of course, In pushing through the new Shops Bill With such astounding force. Yes, it was very kind of them To introduce that clause (Referring to the overtime) In such a noble cause. But I would gently, if I might, Your kind attention draw To just one trifling oversight, One Parliamentary flaw. The Factories' Inspectors Who, when tne day is o'er, Have many a night to walk the town, Passing from door to door. Is this not working overtime? Oh, dear, no, not at all. Perhaps we'd best entMe it: "Just out to pay a call." I think we'll have to introduce Just one more little clause- ' Compensation for overtime In the Civil Servants' cause."

The running of F. W. B. Goodbehere, at the Wellington College sports, at the beginning of the week, has been the theme of much comment m athletic circles. He has long been, recognised among the College authorities as one> of the fastest runners that has ever attended the institution. His performances at the sports in, question were: — 100 yds, 10 2-sthsec, 120 yds Hurdles — championship event 16 l-sthsec, handicap eventl7 2-sthsec ; 250 yds, 27 4-stbjseo; mile run, 4mins 54seo; long jump, 20ft. These times have been received with a certain amount of doubt. George Smith's world's record for the 120vds hurdles is 15 3-sthsec; and Goodbehere is credited with being only 3-sth of a second worse than the world's record. Jack Hempton is the only man in, the colony who has been credited with breaking lO&eo for 100 yds. Smith, Holder, Patrick, Webster, and many others always found r lOseo just beyond their compass, and the times credited to the College lad put him on a par almost with these great performers. Goodbehere is a beautiful runner, with a long, swinging stride and if the times credited him can be relied l upon he will,

no doubt, develop into a world) champion. He is a son of the popular seo- * refcary of the Feildmg Jockey Club.
