CHALLENGE. TO HIS WORSHIP THE MAYOR, WELLINGTON. EXTRACT fiom "Evening Post," Saturday, 16th April, 1904.— The most valuable point elicited by the heckling was the Mayor's denial of Mr. Wilford's extraordinary statement that the Council had been informed by the tramway contractors that owing to the recent removal of the gas mains under the tram-line in some streets, they would not be responsible for the maintenance of the work for six months after completion. Mr. Aitken gives a point-blank denial. I stated, vide "Evening Post," 13th April, 1904, and "N.Z. Times" same date, that the Electrical Engineer, under date 22nd February, 1904, reported to the Council as follows . — "On this length of road a risk has certainly been taken by the Corporation allowing the gas and water mains to be excavated just in front of the permanentway gang. The track has been laid from Berhampore to Rintoul-street. Here, again, we have met with the same difficulty with the water and gas mains as before. The contractors refuse to accept any responsibility as to the track sinking," and that such report was oontained in minute-book No. 3 in possession of the Council, and such report was signed by Mr. Wright, Electrical Engineer. I now say that the above report, containing the words of Mr. Wright- "The contractors refuse to accept any responsibility as to the track sinking," was brought before the Council, discussed on Councillor Nathan's motion on the 25th February, and such discussion was reported in the "N.Z. Times" of 26th February, and the "Evening Post" of the same date. To this Mr. Aitken has given a pointblank denial. I therefore challenge the Mayor to disprove the fact that Mr. Wright reported "that the contractors refuse to accept the responsibility as to the track sinking." THOMAS M. WILFORD. N.B. — Mr. Aitkem denies this statement of mine ; he also denied, publicly and privately, that he would stand for election on this occasion.
