Cricket.

Although presenting a serious and rather unique aspect, there is a sprinkling of humour in witnessing a whole team of cricket lepresentatives playing a five-a-side match amonprst themselves in anticipation of the arrival of opponents worthy of their steel. Such happened in. Masterton during the Easter nolidays. All arrangements had been made in connection with the annual fixture, Manawatu v. Wairarapa, and the members of the latter team were all on the ground ready to commence the match when a telegraphic message was received stating that, the former team had "slipped its secretary up at the last moment at Palmerston." This sort of thing is accountable in club matches, but xs surely without a parallel in "rep." fixtures. It is pre-

suined that the Manawatu Association will require an explanation from its representatives. The situation is rendered all the more serious from the home team's point of view when it is known that the members comprising it traversed many miles to take part in> the match, and sacrificed a whole day's work in consequence. The match was to be played on Easter Saturday and Monday. * * • "Short-slip" says of Rhodes: — "England never sent out a bowler who bowled 'with his head' as Rhodes does." Yorkshire v. Lancashire, played as a benefit match for Tunnecliffe last season, resulted in a profit of £1762 19s Bd. A testimonial promoted by the Canterbury Cricket Association to Syd. Callaway resulted in the sum of £32 6s 2d being subscribed. J. Y. Saunders batting record for Victoria during the season just closed is given as follows: — 9, 2, 0, 0, 0. r 0, 6*, o*. P. McAlister's scores during the same series of matches were : — 0, 45, 40, 30, 34, 39, 7, 104, 139, 0. The centuries in Christchurch club cricket during the season were : — A. Sims, 159* ; K. M. Ollivier, 154* ; H. C. Ridley, 117 and 104; R Ridley, 107, W. Patrick, 101. Ollivier heads the batting average, with a total of 48 runs for 12 innings, not out three times — average, 53.11.
