The Wellington v. Southland Football Match.

This match was played at Invercargill on Wednesday, and lesulted in a vim for Wellington by eight points (two tnes— one converted) to six points (tw o tries). The weather was beautiful overhead, but a strong easterly wind kept the play for the most part on one touchfine. The ground was heavy in places, a coating of sand, put down on portions of the ground during the recent heavy rains, making play, when it came that way, very dead. During the first half of the game neither team scored, although each in turn attacked. The play in this half consisted mostly of passing rushes by the Southland backs, and slashing dashes by the vanguard of the Wellington team. Cross opened the second spell with a fine kick, the bail going out at Southland's three-quarter line. Within three minutes of play commencing in this half, Fred Roberts, with a beautiful dodgy run, beat the whole ot the Southland back division, and scored almost under the posts. Hales easily converted. Southland's first try was the final act in a great piece of combined u oik. The ball oaine to the halfback, Fraser, from the scrummage, the two iiveeiehths handled it in succession, and in turn it went to Read, the centre threequarter, who made a slashing run down the centre and across the field eventually crossing the line a yard from the corner flag. To many it appeared that the flag was knocked over before the ball was grounded, but the referee ruled otherwise. Read scored Southland's second try at the end of a passing rush, in which Spiers, Ward and he took part. A great rush by Abrim. from a lineout, was the beginning of the play that ended in Gray brilliantly scoring Wellington's second try. The game was splendidly contested. In the first half the Wellington team hardly got going, the backs, outside Fred. Roberts and Gray, not shaping well The forwards performed consistently right through, and in the second spell played with great vim. The management had mad© a change in placing the men in the pack. Dodd and Watkins were in the front row, Cross, Joyce (lock), aivd Abrun in the second row, and Wright andDr-scoll in the back row. The forwards worked much better together than against Canterbury, there being greater solidarity in the heavy work. Abrim was the best of the vanguard, though Cross, Dodd, and Hardham were not far behind him. Joyce was good as lock. Wright and Dnscoll were seen to advantage in the solid work, and occasionally in the open. Fred Roberts played excellently at half-back, his kicking, passing, and stopping beine all good. Gray was in evidence right through the game, especially in kicking and running. In the second half, Wilson and McInityre made some fine dashes, but play seldom came in the way of W. Roberts and Barber. Hales gave a good exhibition at fullback, his line-kicking being up to the average. On the Southland side, Stead was a host in himself, and played a great five-eighth game, passing and kicking being the main features of his play. Ward's display was spasmodic, occasionally being brilliant, and occasionally mediocre. Read ran strongly, and kicked well from centre three-quarter. His two tries were well earned. Spiers was fair, but did nothing sensational as wing three-quarter. Murphy was solid at full-back, returning his kicks well down the field. McNie, Jenkins, and Taylor were prominent in a very willing pack of forwards, although they missed the services of Purdue, an ex-New Zealand representative, who could not play through illness. Mr. W- Wilkinson, of Dunedin, acted as referee, but his decisions did not give unmixed satisfaction. By agreement he put the ball into the scrum every time, and herein lay a lot of grumbling. There was an absence of ill-feeling between the players, and the game was played in a fine spirit throughout.
