Wairarapa Football.
As a lesult of last Satuida>'& fixture with Gieytown, the Carterton Club claims the senioi championship for the present season. The winners of the championslup won four out ot five matches, suffering defeat at the hands or Masterton, in the first match oi the year. Greytown takes second honours, defeating Masterton on two occasions, but falling victims to Carterton thrice. Masterton lost three out of four triads, although only sixteen points were registered against the team. The defence of the latter was undoubtedly the feature of the competition, and had all the forwards been available in each contest, the result would have been different. The vanguard of the champion team ■comprises giants at the game, notably McMinn and Armstrong, and these are practically responsible for their team's success. On Soturdsy, Carterton won its final match by nine points! to three. The former score was made up of tries by Diamond, Smart, and Johnston, not one of which wae converted. Mr. A. Campbell refereed. The three members of the 1903 New ZeaJand team were engaged in this game, and each made a bold bid to sustain his reputation, and deserve the colony's confidence. Udy was particularly aggressive and, although he has already represented the Waararapa neaily fifty times, he displays his oustomary sting and prowess. It will also be interestui"- to know that Armstrong has appeared in 'rep." matches on thirty-three occasions. McMinn is a new -chum. ♦ » * I was in hopes of supplying leadeis with the personnel of our representative team to meet Wellington on Saturday week, but I understand the definite selection was deferred owing to one of the three selectors taking exception to the inclusion of so few of the members of his favoured club. I believe a representation of five from each of the three clubs was favoured by the dominant powers of the Committee, and was something like the following —Fullback, Len Williams, three-quarters, Smart, Rogers, and Diamond; fiveeighth, Marsh, half, Logan or McGuire, forwards, Jury and Warner (wings), Lambie, Cadwaillader (2), Johnston. Morris, Workman and Raisen. * *• * In this connection the "Wairarapa Leader" says —"Trouble seems to be looming ahead of the Wairarapa Rugby Union, in connection with the selection of representative teams. At present, the Selection Committee consists of three delegates, one of whom bases his knowledge of Rugby on the fact that he was once a member of a fire brigade team- another because he claims that a ball is dead whenever it strikes a goal post, while the third man is a recognised authority on the laws of the game, and how it should be played." The writer goes on to say that the first two selected a team to play against Wellington on the 18th mst. and submitted it to the other party. He wanted to know many things — why this one, that one, and the other one were not included. The upshot was that no team at all was published, and the Carterton paper considers Mr W. McKenzie should resign his position as a member of the Selection Committee, as a matter of justice to the Carterton Club, whose players, it considers, were not being fairly treated bv the other members of the Committee. * * * In the junior contests, on Saturday, Masterton defeated Gladstone bv six points to nil, whilst Carterton and Greytown drew. Masterton is now leading by two points in the banner competition, and only needs a draw to make its club the holders for the season.
