A Vexed Question.
Why on earth did we meet? What perfidious dart Wrought such instant defeat In my cupid-proof heart, When last night you invaded tihe corner Where I glowered aloof and apart? You were tired of the heat, Of the throng that was smart, And consented to eat A pink pyramid tart. Then we talked — and behold — we discovered In each other our own counterpart. Then my dreanu> seemed complete As we dwelt on our art , Fond hopes that were sweet Did we shyly impart, While the music discoursed Leslie Stuart Or it may have been Grieg and Mozart. Oh ' the moments flew fleet, And I woke with a start As you rose from your seat
With a sigh — to depart. Good-bye ' — I was left on the ocean Adntt, without ruddei or chait My days are effete, Thei-e's a pain in my heart , And each hour I repeat Though it adds to the smait, No longer, oh, why did we meet, but Ye gods why on earth did we part ? — J. Pope, in the "Queen."
Theie was a young fellow called Cholmondley Who couited a maiden most colmondley. He said, " Your blight eyes Stnke me dumb with suipieyes, bo excuse me if I couit you dolmondley."
