LICENSING COMMITTEE ELECTION. TO THE ELECIOES OF THE WELLINGTON ELECTORAL AND LICENSING DISTEICT. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN— We have pleasure m off ei ing our services to you as Candidates for election to the Licensing Committee, and respectfully submit the fol lowing reasons for your consideiation : — 1. Being unpledged to any party, and desirous of a\oidmg the extremes of either, we shall be piepared, if elected, to act in an impartial, honest, and judicial mannei, which we conceive will most fittingly conserve the interest of the public geneially. 2 We do not pledge ourselves to any platform other than a stiict insistence on the observance of the law. 3. We are not in favour, in a seaport town such as Wellington, of alteration of the existing law as to the hour of closing hotels. We are assuied it would be subversive of the best inteiests of the public, especially the travelling section, besides offering some inducement to licensees to break the law. The present hour of 11 meets all requirements, and we are prepared to insist upon its lawful observance. 4. We also, like the Prohibitionist candidates, are of opinion that the law-abiding licensee is cairying on a peifectly legitimate business, but we have no sympathy with the habitual law-breaker or evader, who will not receive the slightest consideration at our hands. The aim of the existing law is to regulate the traffic and it will be our aim to assist in effecting that object. 5. The public is clearly entitled to protection from the many dangers that may attach to defective sanitation, insufficient space, adulteration, and fire. We claim that it is an individual and collective duty to endeavqur to raise the tone of public morals. Drunkenness, gambling, and kindred vices, with their attendant evils, should be put down with a strong hand, and we shall at all times be prepared to assist the authorities to compass this object. 6. We have lived in your midst for many years, and our lives and actions have been before you. Our reputation is at stake, and if elected we pledge ourselves to use our best efforts to enforce a strict observance of the law, and to an honest and impartial administration without fear or favour. PETEE HUTSON, H. VAN STAVEEEN, WILLIAM CABLE, H. S. HUEEELL, PAUL COFFEY. N.B. — All electors are earnestly invited to go to the poll on the 25th instant and vote for the MODEEATE COMMITTEE 1 . All persons whose names are on the roll for the election of members to the House of Eepresentatives are entitled to vote at the election of a Licensing Committee.
