It is because good v, orks of reference are really necessary now-a-days that "The Times" has been enabled to offer the "Encyclopaedia Britanmca" and The Century Dictionary & Cyclopedia and Atlas at such low prices. If only the limited class who buy luxuries could be expected to purchase these books, it would be impracticable to sell a vast number of copies, and it is only by printing on a large scale that low prices can be attained. The public served itself in the matter, for it was the alacrity with which ' The Times" Reprint of the 'Encyclopaedia Britanmca" was purchased that made it possible for ' The Times" to undertake the issue of "The Century" upon the large scale which alone can make low prices practicable.
