Enterprise of "The Times." Notable Reference Work offered at Big Discount.
It is because good v, orks of reference are really necessary now-a-days that "The Times" has been enabled to offer the "Encyclopaedia Britanmca" and The Century Dictionary & Cyclopedia and Atlas at such low prices. If only the limited class who buy luxuries could be expected to purchase these books, it would be impracticable to sell a vast number of copies, and it is only by printing on a large scale that low prices can be attained. The public served itself in the matter, for it was the alacrity with which ' The Times" Reprint of the 'Encyclopaedia Britanmca" was purchased that made it possible for ' The Times" to undertake the issue of "The Century" upon the large scale which alone can make low prices practicable. Notwithstanding all that the pessimists have to say about the deterioration of oubhc taste, an opportunity to buy standard works of reference at a minimum puce has been conclusively show n to be precisely the sort of oppoitunity that people desire to find. Professor William Dwight Whitnev Ph.D , LL.D. the editor-in-chief of The Century Dictionary & Oyclop.edia & Atlas was not only eminent, but almost pre-eminent, among philologists. ■Selected by the editors of the "Encyclopaedia Bntannica" to write' the aiticle on "Philology" in vol. xviii. of that
work, lie is already known to those ty ho have read the article in. question as a writer of the greatest directness of thought and clearness. The offer by "The Times" of "The Century" is on parallel lines with its formeir successful enterprise. Early subscribers are supplied "The Century" in ten royal octavo volumes at a discount of 40 per cent, from the publishers^ prices, on easy monthly payments, and with immediate delivery from Wellington.
