Hockey Notes.

By Bully.

Following are the results of last Saturday's matches — Senior United 4, Vivian 0 , Wellington 4, Victoria College 3 , Karon, a bye. Junior United 4, Karon 2, Wellington 7, Vivian 1 , Waiwetu 0> Victoria College 0. The appeal of the Waiwetu Club agaanst a decision of the referee in the junior heat., Waiwetu v. United, was disposed of by the Association on Tuesday night. The committee considered that the appeal was based on a matter of fact, and therefore upheld the referee's 1 decision, and dismissed the protest. » * * The Welington team was nearly caught napping bv the Collegians, and as above only scraped home by one point. The Collegians got to work very quickly and good play by the Bogle brothers enabled one of them to score before their opponents had realized what was happening. This shock had the effect of p-alvanis-ing the Wellington men into some semblance of life, and a dribble up the line bv Hull took the play into College territory, where Bridge secured the ball after some desultory line play, and centred to MacShane, who snot a p-cod goal, and equalized matters. After this, for a space the Wellington team went to sleep again, a fact that the College team were not remiss in taking advantage of, the Bogle brother repeating their former performance bv between them, securing another goal From thisi point until the end of the first spell the Wellington men shook off tineir apathy, and things livened up considerably, another score to Wellington'^ credit resulting through a good shot v King. The second spell opened up in Wellington's favour, and Pilkington, h\ following up a shot of Bridge's that rebounded from the goal-keeper, notched another, and shortly afterwards, apparently satisfied with their two points' lead Wellington lapsed again into me lethiairgnc stiate that characterised their play in the first spell, and the College proceeded to run rings round the opposing backs, and were rewarded in their endeavours by the scoring of their third goal bv Beere, who was playin^ an excellent game throughout. The whistlei sounded with the play in neutral teritory, after a most curious game, which, though full of incident, and containing spasmodic flashes of srood play, was anything but what a senior game of hookey should be, from a scientific point of view. On the College side, the Bogle biofchers did immense service, their line play being especially meritorious. They were aided in their efforts by the excellent passing out of Beere, at centreforward. Ostleir was the best of the College rearguard, Richmond bein^ right off-colour. The play of the Wellington team was only mediocre, ai:rl calls for no criticism. As anticipated, United defeated Vivian. Both teams were short-handed United having ten men, and their op ponents could only muster nine. The game needs little description, consisting in the main of an attack on the light blues' goal bv the United vanguard which resulted in a score of four woah to the older club, Hickson registering; two and Organ two. The latter player should centre ciuicker, and give his inside men a chance to get on to the ball for a shot.

Morpetih, ait centre-halt, foi Vivian, played a good game, but should lemembeir that ohairguig an opponent is not allow od m the game Hoby was very fair at full, and Damson again showed good foiward foim He is the pick of a rathei weak set of forwards. An important meeting of the Wellington Hockey Association w a.s held on Tuesday naght, when, in view of the Canterbury Association having formed a New Zealand Hockey Association

without consulting other kindred bodies, it was decided to cancel the annual maitoh with, tha/b province. I shall refeiri to this matter at length in my next week's notes. » As a further result of this decision, all inter-club matches that were to have been played this month with the Southern clubs are off, but the Association decided to send a representative team to NieAson, on the 30th instant, and also to airange a match with the Manawatu Assooaitdon, to be played in Wellington on the 6th September.
