The following are the results of last Saturday's matches — Senior United 3 Wellington 1 , Karon .">, Victona College 1 , Vivians, a bye. Junior Waiwetu 3, Wellington II 0. Karon II .I Vivians 11. 3 United 11. 10, Victona College II 0 Quire a nuinbei of spectators jouine\ed to Miramar to see the UnitedWellington heat, and were rewarded by seeing a fast open match, both teams gn mg good expositions of the game Wellington opened the ball bv attackins; stronejh United conceding a corner From the hit out, Bridge had an unsuccessful shot The bully-off lesulted in United again being hard pies.ied, and MacShane missed an eas\ chance, gi\ ing a fiee hit for "sticks." This «.t«necl off the attack for a while but the blue and white forwards came again and tlus time weie more successful King doing the needful bv faf=t follow m<r up Aftei a spell of e\ en play, Smythe got aw a\ down the line and ,iftei enticing the opposing goal-keep fiom his place beat him for the ball and equalised matters bv scoring a smart goal The rest of the spell was fast and even, except for one United rush, w-hich i exulted m Ruddock registering: another score though it must be said that the- leferee overlooked a palpable kick-on b\ this pla-\ er in the circle The second spell was not so even the United f oi wards making things uncomfortably sultry for the Wellington backs two oi thiee hot shots going very near the mark The defence, until near the end was sound but the incessant attack told its tale, and Smythe, bv following up a shot bv HicWn that rebounded from Preston (the Wellington groal-keepei) put the issue beyond doubt bv scoring anothei point After this set-back, Wellington onl\ looked dangerous once but a free hit to United cleaied their lines, and the game ended United 3, Welhnorton 1. There is no doubt the best team won. The forwards, with Hickson as a pivot, worked splendidly, especially Smythe who was a veritable thorn m the flesh of the defenders. He earned hi<. two goals thoroughly. Hickson was right up to reputation, and Organ, on the right wing made a strong bid for that position m the representative team. The two insides did good work, and played fast on to the Wellington backs. The half line was not too eood, but the full-backs Ashbolt and C. Hickson, did all that was necessary, and a little over and did it well. The Wellington team put up a good fight but seemed run to a standstill before the end of the game. The backs had most of the work, and, on the whole did well, though, in the end, rather "rattled" by the repeated rushes of the United forwards Preston, m goal, had a busy time, and acquitted himself w r ell Wheeler and Atkinson, as full-backs, were as usual, sure, but the former neglected the wing-forward on his side of the halves. Reid was best, the other two being under a cloud, though it must be said they had a hard row to hoe in looking after Hickson and Smythe Hull, left wing, was the best of the vanguard, and was ably seconded bv
Filkuigton, las inside man. King, at co 11 tic, was bettor than usual and did some excellent following up and smothtuing. Uiidgo and AiacSha.no, on the light wine did not have so much woik as tliev might have hail, but the lattei mailed his display by missing a ien r easy ohance at the start of the game The other senior game was chiefly iumarkable on account of the Kaion team scoring fne goals against Victona College m the first spell, and being in - able to score again in the second, piesumably on account of ' that tired feeling " Fiom the first bully Victoria College broke awvn and Bogle scored with a pretty shot.
This livened Karon up, and Davies, follow ing up fast, smothered the opposing backs, and scored, and shortly afterwards repeated the performance. The country men's attack continued, and Williams scored, after a nice dribble to the circle, and, within a few minutes, Adams and Cathie added their quota. The play in the rest of the spell, and in the second half, was of a very desult01 y character, and calls for no special comment. Ostler and Richmond were prominent in the College back division, a,nd Beere and the Bogle brothers in the vanguard Davies was the only man in the Karon team who deserves special mention, with the possible exception of Spiers.
