Queen Alexandra.
Alexandra, wilt thou be, As oui mother, in her room Whom we mourned so heavily, Weeping in a world-wide gloom 9 'Twere not possible to vow, Musing on Victoiia dead, Unto one less true than thou, One less truly worshipped.
But no stranger dost thou stand Gazing into alien eyes — Our whole faith thou dost command, ' By thy proven constancies. When we plighted our first troth To a Prince's beauteous bride, There was welcome in our oath, But, to-day, a passionate pride. We, a people who love well — When it comes to loving — swear, By thy daily growing spell, Thou hast shown us we did not en. For by all the tenderness, That made fragrance for her heart Who has left us, we confess Thou hast done a daughter's part. And, by eveiy holy thing Perfect wifehood doth embrace, Bead we gladness to our King, In thy well-beloved face. Thus, remembering all we know Of thy giacious womanhood, Pray we now, with voices low, " Help us say ' The Lord is good.' " He is good, 'tis peace at last, Peace ' and yet we feel thy tears With thy people's flowing fast ; And not all for banished fears. By the mercy of the Lord, Aye, and at Imperial cost, Stand we victois; but the sword 2B?f Wounded us, who have not losL , Lady, by the light that trails O'er the ocean reach afar, When the moon arising hails Yon bught cioss, by many a star Burning in a southern sky, Wak'ning winds have learned a sound, Like to sobbing fierce and dry, Which the daylight has not drowned. Yet, throughout the realm, where'er Hearts keep time to grief's slow beat, 'Tis a sorrow thou dost share, By a sympathy complete. E'en our-proud resisting foe, Whose long courage sets their slain, By our heroes, they shall know, What thy touch can mean in pain. But to-day, no pain must cloud Eyes that on a orowning wait, King and Consort sovran-browed 'Mid the thronging pomps of State* While one mighty prayer upsoars, Where the utmost planet thrills, Like the tumult of vast shores, Dying through the eternal hills.
