Lawn Tennis.

Nothing very exciting lias been happening on the Thorndon courts during the holidays, but now the championship matches a.ie being played off, advantage being taken of the fine weather. Mi. Laishley lias again won the Handicap Singles (handicap, owe 40), beating m the final Mr. G. Smythe (owe loj. Tins is the third vear that Mr. Laishley has proved victorious in this event. The only way to prevent the same result in the future will be to give other players more handicap. I regret to say that the Ladies' Handicap fell through, owing to want of entries. The holidays, probably, had much to do with this, but there must be a great lack of energy aJso amongst the ladies of the club. However, for the championship the entries are fairly strong, and the games will be very interesting. So far the following games have been played off Miss Kennedy beat Mrs. Holmes, Miss 0 Gore beat Miss G. Morrah. Miss F. Marchant beat Miss Simpson, Mrs. Marchbanks beat Miss Grant. In the Men's Championship Mr. Sloman beat Mr Devemsh, Mr. H Gore beat Mr. Sloman, Mi. G. Didsbury beat Mi. Richardson, Mr. Laishlev beat Mr. Didsburv, Mr. C. Gore beat Mr. S Kennedy. Mr. Cox, an ex-champion of the Thorndon Club, who lately won the championshin at Masterton. passed through Wellington last week and Dlayed a few games at the local courts. s He is m splendid form, and hopes to coinpeto at the Easter tournament, when it will be interesting to see how our players shape against him. Miss Nunnely also visited the courts when she passed through last week, but her play was not up to her usually brilliant standard. She is living now in the South Canterbury district. If the weather is good at Easter, the tournament should be very enjoyable. The entries for the Wellington District Championship are always strong. Mrs Pavne, who holds the honour at present, will compete, also Miss Pavne, Miss Powdrell, and Miss Cave (whose good plav at the last tournament will be lemembered).
