A NOTE struck by some members of the Industrial Association, at their annual dinner recently, is a note well worth listening to. It was evidently the opinion of some men well able to judge that m the striving to place the working man on a higher plane the industries of the country had suffered. It was pointed out, too, by those who lightly held optimistic views, New Zealand, like the provcibial good young man, had started with nothing, and had by dint of much doing succeeded in making a name for herself. * # • Perfectly true, of course, but, having made a name, has she become weary after well-doing ? There is no doubt that the stringent provisions of our labour laws point that way The name certainly was not made by working as few hours as possible, by lepeatcd bickerings between master and man, and by resting up to the full extent of the law made and provided by unions run by those who believe that this is the working-man s paradise The very name of Paiadise points in the direction of obtaining a maximum of comfort with a minimum of toil. * * • New Zealand, to maintain the position she has gamed, must not live in a working-man's pazadise, but strive not how little to do, but how much to perform She is the envy of the world on paper Panned out, the ciushing of industry by stringent laws and unnecessary concessions to a people who are hale and strong enough not to need them We want to talk less, and do more While striving for an adequate remuneration, New Zealand should certainly stiive for a future position To con(Gontinued on Page 10.)
