NORMAL CONDITIONS RESTORED. Let the People Have an Innings.
THE people of New Zealand have lived m an artificial atmosphere during the Royal visit, and the citizens of Wellington having done their duty hospitably, have now time to think of their pressing needs The excessive stiam occasioned by the novel and much-appre ciated events of the past few weeks have taxed the councils of New Zealand cities to the utmost, and Wellington not the least An unusual activity possessed our civic rulers, who determined that Wellington should blossom forth as the premier city m point of decorative gorgeousness, and so gave their best energies to the successful manipulation of affairs. * * # Now, however, that the over-taxed brains of the authorities have time to pondei other things than ducal receptions, we would urge, as we did before the historic event occurred, that the people be the authorities' chief consideration, since the Duke has been adequately disposed of The condition of our roads is now being emphasised by the removal of the disguising bunting And the gentleman who "wishes to make Wellington municipally the most perfect city m New Zealand," has a large, if congenial, task befoie him The propounder of this creditable ambition exercised his talents to good effect during the festivities, although he professed to care little for anything but the city he is so pioud of Has he ever udden on a tiam, or crossed a load in mid city on a dark night ' Has he been present at a fiie when the energy of the Fire Brigade pioved unavailing, and when the piessuie of water resembled a toy squirt? Many thousands of pounds have been spent by bodies coiporate and private individuals to make the welcome to Then Royal Highnesses pleasant It is light and proper that it should be so The convenience and the welfaie of the community should be the next consideration of the civic authorities The creditable ambition of the Chief Magistrate to make Wellington municipal-
