ULRIC H'S SPIRAL CENTRIFUGAL GOLD DREDGE.
THIS dredge, a working model of which is now on view at Mr. Ulrich's office, 36, Lambton Quay, should supply a long-felt want to the mining community at large. A dredge capable of lifting close on 1000 tons of material per diem can be constructed for about the fifth part of what a bucket-dredge costs. There is absolutely no friction to speak of. The whole apparatus runs on a central axle, the two points of which work on ball bearings on an inclined plane, and only the sixth part of the ordinary steam-power is required in place of a buckets-dredge of the same working capacity. Mr. Ulrich is having a large dredge of this pattern constructed at his own expense, to put on one of the claims in he is connected. Should this dredge fulfil all requirements, it will produce a revolution in the dredging industry, as it can be built suitable for all parties, and the principle can also be applied to smaller ones run by hand power. Parties of miners of from three to four men will then be able to purchase siuch a dredge from £100 upwards, according to size, and, on the numerous fine gravel and black sand claims so prevalent on the Coast, it certainly promises to be superior to bucket dredging, as tho black sand, even in conjunction with clay, cannot stick in the cylinder, as is often the case in bucket dredging.
