NEW ZEALAND RAILWAYS. Stores Manager's Office. Wellington, 22nd April, 1901. THE Railway Department will purchase SLEEPERS, 7ft. by Bin. by sin. in size, in lots of 250 or more, delivered and stacked at any railwaystation or siding, at the following rates, viz. : — Hewn or Sawn Totara Sleepers at 3s 6d each. OFFERS TO SUPPLY WILL BE RECEIVED AT THE RAILWAY STORES MANAGER'S OFFICE UP TO 31st MAY, 1901. The trees from which sleepers will be cut shall be felled during the months of June, July, and August. All timber must be felled by September. Sleepers to be all heart-wood, free from large knots, shakes, and other defects; hewn true in shape, and out of winding ; to be sawn square at ends ; to be cut from large trees (no honeyoombed or burnt timber will be accepted) ; to be stacked as directed, and to be approved and passed by the Railway Inspector. Sleepers will be inspected in the bush if so required by the suppliers, but no Inspector will be sent to pass a less number than 250. On receiving notice of sleepers being ready for inspection, the District Engineer will send an Inspector to pass and brand them. After the sleepers have been branded and inspected the suppliers must deliver them at the railway-station or siding at which he offered to supply, after such delivery has been made the Inspector will give the supplier his certificate, and for such as have passed inspection payment will be made within fourteen days, or as near as may be, of the Inspector's certificate having been given. Fifty per cent, of the number undertaken to be supplied, to be delivered by the end of October, and the whole by the 31st December, 1901. Condemned sleepers must be distinctly branded by the Inspector. Before commencing to fell the trees notice must be given to the District Engineer, that he may send the Inspector into the bush to view the trees intended to be cut. BY ORDER.

This settlement is part of the well-known Otaio Estate, formerly owned by Mr. Teschemaker; is situated between Timaru and Waimate, twenty miles from the former town and eleven miles from the latter. Land well adapted for mixed farming; in good heart; has produced heavy crops of wheat, and Up to 60 bushels of oats to the acre. Depth of strong black soil, 7in. to Bin. Climate temperate; sufficient rainfall for general farming. Open for application, at Christchurch and Timaru, on 13th May, 1901. Ballot to be held at Timaru on 18th May. •MANGAWHATA SETTLEMENT WELLINGTON (formerly known a^ Morrisons Estate). — 1,226 acres, divided into seven sections, for disposal on lease in perpetuity, in areas varying from 98£ acres to 319 acres, at rentals from 12s 9d to 15s per acre per annum. This settlement is situated between Rongotea and Oroua Bridge Railwaystation, in a prosperous district, near important townships. The land is first-class, comprising grassed flats suitable for dairy-farming and fattening stock. Open for application, at Wellington and Palmerston North, on Tuesday, 14th May, 1901. Ballot to be held at Palmerston North on 16th May.
