Cycling.
The bicyclists competing on Saturday are practically new to us this season ; we haven't seen much of them as yet. Randrup must be working his way down to the championship meeting, so he should have a fair amount of form on. A rider for whom I have a lot of respect is Reardon, who hails from Masterton. I well remember the way he boat Dan Plunkett in the run home in a couple of events at the Caledonian meeting at Masterton New Year time twelve months ago. In my opinion, if in form, there is nothing in the races but Reardon, and if anyone pushes him hard it will be Randrup, from the mark.
Tierney has returned to Auckland from his trip to America and England, and is training in view of this season's championships. His presence should lend additional interest to the gathering in Christchurch next month. J. Chalmers is on the 70yds mark for two miles in Australia, but cannot score a place in heats. The Melbourne "Sportsman" says a match between the two Yankees — Taylor and Martin — would draw a great crowd. The Adelaide "Critic," discussing the South Australian League meeting, remarks — "Martin promises to appear, but he also wants to win, and usually stipulates as much. Nevertheless, Martin, is not the only cyclist in the race, and he cannot have everything."
