WELLINGTON RACING CLUB.

THOSE who were present at the Wellington Baring Club's Spring Meeting on Thursday and Saturday had a most enjoyable outing. The weather was beautiful. The totalisator, which is the principal source of revenue, showed a considerable increase compared with last year, the figures being, 1899, £15,749; 1900, £20,146. The Porirua team was in great form. Out of six starts four races went to Mr Prosser's lot, the other starters being second and unplaced. Messrs Douglas Gordon and J. R. Macdonald, Porima patrons, secured i's9o of the prize money. In the Wellington Handicap Tortufla was winning easily at the distance, but Jenkins eased her up in the straight and made a good race of it. Under a big {burden on the second day she had to give way to the light weights. Walter Best's horses, Oracle, Eedoubt and Frost, were all heavily backed the first day, Eedoubt running second and the others unplaced. Frost made an inglorious display, and when he won on the second day the stewards considered he was not entitled to the race, and awarded it to Hotu. On Frost's form the second day he should have won both the hurdle races. The stewards ruled the horse out. Chasseur, Whitney, The Shannon, Hotu and Kissmary were the most consistent performers at the meeting. Boreas is said to be amiss. Frost cannot start at Feilding. St. Ilario has been entered for the Greymouth Cup. There were several sleepers at the local meeting last week. Mr Evitt declared the Auckland Cup weights on Monday last. Derritt and Hewitt came up from South, but neither got a ride. The Labourer was submitted to auction at Melbourne and passed in. C. Jenkins and G. Price were the most successful horsemen at the Hutt. Eebel has been engaged in hurdle races at West Coast Christmas meetings. Secretaries Luckie (Hawke's Bay) and McKerzie (Carterton) were at the Hutt. Seahorse has returned to Auckland after his second unsuccessful trip to Australia. Monte Carlo, Val, and Jessie Palm gave good exhibitions of trotting at Petone last week. Several horses who ran unsuccessfully here may show improved form at Feilding. Battleaxe and Cora Linn were at the Hutt, but did not start. Both are slightly amiss. Advance was galloped at the Hutt prior to the recent meeting, but was not started. Lady Lome, who ran unsuccessfully at the Hutt last week, has been mated with Torpedo. The Wellington Cup candidate Mackintosh failed to get a place in the Maiden Hack Race. J. Lowe likes the Stepniak — Britomarte colt one of his patrons recently purchased in the South. Derry and St. Ilario are now trained by M. Goodyer, and will be raced at West Coast meetings. J. Gallagher has recovered from his recent illness, and is at present on a visit to the Hot Lakes. A four-year-old full-brother to Renown is in training at Hastings with a view to the Ladies' Bracelet. T. OBrien, who rode Eubin at the Hutt has until recently been riding for Murray Hobbs's stable. Handieappers Evitt and Henrys were in good form. The first-named was the only Auckland visitor present. Old identities on the Hutt track were " Kaiser " Myers and Flying Shot. The latter is owned by Mr Lance Wood. E. J. Walden, trainer of Woolloomooloo, La Marquise, and Sweet Oil, recently had his residence at Canterbury burnt down.

The Takapuna Jockey Club's Spring Meeting concludes on Saturday. The Steeplechase is the principal event. Jim Beid has sold Derringcotte to a patron of D. Wrights, and he ran in the '• bird's eye" of Mr F. Bedford at the Hutt. Rivulet (Javelin — Cascade) has foaled a full-brother to Brooklet, The Brook, Materoa, The Shannon and la, at Te Mabanga. "W. Holmes, who rode Materoa in the Pearce Handicap, intends travelling the North Island meetings, and will reside in Wanganui. Ostiak won the Shorts Handicap easily the first day. The stable relied on Sentry in the Waiwetu, but he was no match for Chasseur. The Hutt track did not suit the Dunedin horses, St Denis and Proposal. Zither was brought up from South, and goes on to Feilding. The placed horses in the Pearce Handicap were sired by Torpedo. Materoa and The Shannon are full sisters. Tortulla is also one of the breed. The Oaks winner, Ismene, started twice, but ran poorly on both occasions. She is evidently not much class, unless her local form was wrong. Among the Sylvia Park yearlings to be submitted on December 31st are full brothers to Beddington and Miss Delaval and full sister to Nonette. The judge's decision in the Hack Welter Handicap at the Hutt was a half-length. It was more likely a dead-heat. Waterford appeared to just get up on the post. At the Canterbury Jockey Club's Jubilee Meeting there were 296 starters in thirtytwo races. .£1 invested on each horse would have resulted in a loss of £41 3s 6d. Handicapper J. O. Evitt may break the return journey to Auckland at Feilding, and see the first day's races there on Thursday, and be at Takapuna on Saturday. W. Davis has the only local trainer to score. J. Armstrong was very close indeed with Gipsy Jack, and J. Lowe got second monej with Aide-dc-Camp. Frost ran unplaced the first day and won on the second. So did Waterford, Melwood and Materoa. Tortulla won the first day and did not get a place on the second. Captain Russell, Mr G. G. Stead, and Sir George Clifford were unsuccessfully represented at the Hutt. The latter was present, but the two first-named were absent. Mr Robinson informs me he has disposed of Will-o' -the- Wisp to a patron of P. Martin's for £200. The horse had the misfortune to pick up a nail, and the injury was likely to keep him in retirement for some time. West Guard did Alf. Shearsby a good turn by winning the Flying Hack Handicap on the second day. The daughter of Vanguard was ridden by T. Wilson. Jockeys were so plentiful at the meeting that he had only two rides. In the St. Andrew's Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Takapuna, Mr Knight awarded Cavalerio the same impost as Coronet. Mr Harris withdrew the Cuirassier gelding as soon as he saw the weights. Harry Goodman scored somewhat easily with Transport in the Maiden Hack Race. Although trained and owned in Dunedin, he was bred in Auckland and is by Cuirassier — Tasmania. Cherrystone, Goodman's other string, only started once. She is small, and weight stops her. W. Davies, the Hutt trainer, won £280 in stakes by the aid of Melwood and Waterford. The St Leger colt was making his first appearance out of hack company, and showed that he could hold his own with the best of them. Waterford has not been a long time up, and should score again shortly. The Dunedin Jockey Club's Spring Meeting will be held at Wingatui on Thursday and Saturday of this week. The principal events on the second day are the St. Andrew's Handicap and Stephenson Memorial Stakes. Blazer can hardly lose the last-named event. The annual meeting of the Waitara Jockey Club was held on Thursday last. Scout (by Vanguard), who is now the boss sprinter on the Coast, won the Flying Handicap and Clifton Stakes. Mr J. Kennedy, of Momahaki, who owned Recluse, won two events with that horse's progeny. Momahaki, who ran unplaced in the Flying, won the Cup ; and Marianthus, who ran second to Scout in the Clifton Stakes, won the Final Flutter. Lady Bell (by Lebel) won the Welter Handicap, beating Puanga (Sou'-wester — Early Bird mare), who, earlier in the day, had accounted for the Maiden.
