Swimming.

The N.Z. Herald" says: "There is much speculation as to the respective merits of Fred Truscott and Jack Wauchop for the championships on NewYear's Day, especially the 220 yards." The Thorndon Club decided a. 50 Yards Handicap Race in the Thorndon Baths on Friday last, 23rd instant, 14 competitors participating in the event. The placed men (6) in the heats swam in the final, and a splendid race from end to end resulted in a win for "Bob" Ronayne (lOsecs), F., Roberts (3secs), who swam excellently, being second, and W. E. Rawson (ssecs) third. Messrs. G. Cloake and J. P. Maxwell acted as judges, and Mr. A. W. Smith as starter. At a meeting of the committee of the above club, held on Monday evening last, Messrs. R. C. Stone, A. W. Smith and A. J. Styles were appointed delegates to the New Zealand Association. The Wellington Club were to have determined the first distance (50 yards) for the three-guinea trophy on Wednesday last. Letters have been received from the Secretary of the Lyttelton Club, inviting teams from this city to compete at its carnival, which is to be held at the Graving Dock on the Ist and 2nd January next. I understand there is little chance of getting a team away. The season opened in Auckland on the 23rd instant, with a 72 yards handicap. There were 15 starters. The race resulted in a win for G. A. Tyler by a touch, in the good time of 45 l-ssec. A very successful season is anticipated. Messrs. G. J. C. Smart and R. W. St. Clair have been elected honorary life members of the New Zealand Association, in recognition of their services in bringing about an amalgamation between the two associations. Says "London Sportsman" of October 11th: The Harodian entertainment of 1900 will always be remembered if only for the fact that three of the most accomplished swimmers that have ever journeyed from Australia, to wit, F. C. Y. Lane, J. H. Hellings, and Y. Lindberg — were making their last appearance in London, previous to their return home. It may at once be said that, although very successful, they have become most popular amongst all classes of swimmers, and their departure is regretted by all. It may be of interest to state that last , evening they took part in the 60 Yards Open Handicap, and their respective times were — Lane, 35 3-ssec; Hellings, 36 4-ssec; Lindberg, 37 4-ssec.
