There is nbt 'one' of this'age engaged next week. Malatua and Fulmen have each acted as runner-up in the New Zealand Cup. Will either go one better next month ? Gorrick (Hotchkiss — Queen Cole), who ■is trained at the Hutt, is among the acceptors for the C J.C Welcome Stakes. On his running in the Eclipse Stakes, Kinglike should have run the Caulfield Cup in 2.35. He failed to get a place in 2.36}. . There should be some competition for the yearling brother to Skobeloff, Romanoff and Indian Queen at Christchurch next month. The race, between Blazer, Boreas, Jabber, Goldspur, and Benzoni in the Stewards' Stakes should be worth the trip to Riccarton. In the event of either Record Reign, Dundas, or MalatUa winning the New Zealand Cup, firms of bookmakers may be the biggest winner^. The New Zealand Cup being run on a Saturday this year, local sports will be able to get down on the Friday night and return on the Saturday night. Hastings's win in the Railway Handicap, at Napier Park, was the only one George Wright had during his southern trip, and would ]ust about pay expenses. Grasspan, on his running at Caulfield, is probably the best two-year-old in Victoria. He is trained by T. Payten, who also scored with Hautain and Lord Rudolph. Grasspan is bj Grafton, sire of Heriot, a two-year-old filly owned by Dan O'Brien.
Dr Bill, Binglet, and Frontier will have twelve months' enforced spell. The well-bred Casablanca (St. LegerBianca) scored a win at Napier Park. The Hon. J. D. Ormond has never won a Canterbury Derby. Captain Russell's Heiress, the Wellesley Stakes winner, won the Grand Stand Handicap, seven furlonirs, at Napier Park. She is not engaged in the Stewards Handicap at Riccarton, but is in the Oaks and should run well. Although the weather at Napier Park was bad, the totalisator turnover (£9083) was only less than the corresponding meeting last year. Clubs are having a bad time all round, and Blenheim stands postponed indefinitely. Palliser (by Nordenfeldt — Radiance) died recently in the Southland district. Martin Taylor, the well-known Christchurch sport and greyhound racer, was in Wellington on Saturday last. He informed me that, after the Auckland Cup meeting, he intends taking a trip to San Francisco with some longtails, to race for a big stake there. Martin took Otto Cribb across to Sydney about a year back, and would have made a hat-full of money had he stuck to the Christchurch boy. He has won twenty-two fights, and recently defeated Mick Dunn for the Middleweight Championship. When Otto first arrived in Sydney, he " put them on " with Dunn, and Larry Foley, who saw the " go," advised Martin to take the boy back to Maoriland.
