J. J. Russell is recovering, and is able to get about. Mr P. F. Tancred is about again, after a somewhat severe illness. Blue Jacket has, so far, been a great disappointment this season. Chasseur made a poor display in the Owen Stikes at Wanganui. The Caulfield Stakes and Toorak Handicap are decided on Saturday. Who owns Ruamahunga and Aide-dc-Camp ? Don^t all speak at once. The Canterbury Jockey Club have raised Mr J. E. Henry's salary to £300. By the aid of Advance and Tortulla the Porirua stable won JE2BO at Wanganui. Advance's two-year-old half-brother by, Rangipuhi, has been named Laureate. Messrs G. G. Stead and D. OBrien have nominated at the Auckland Cup meeting. Harry Goodman, the well known Dunedin trainer, has taken up his quarters at Riccarton. Daphne has won the Waipawa County Racing Club Handicap three years in succession. Renown's victory in the Wanganui Guineas was worth to the Hon. J. D. Ormond. Clytie, who won a double at the Geraldine meeting, is engaged in the C.J.C. Oaks. A commission was worked in Auckland last week in favour of Military for the New Zealand Cup. Advance, Tortulla, Boreas, and Ostiak represent the Porirua stable at the Auckland Summer Meeting. Record Reign, Scotty and Cavalier pass through on their way to Christchurch this week. The Foresters are not generally liked as stable horses. Two of them got home at the Masterton meeting. Coin now runs in the name of Mr T. Murcott. of Masterton. His brace of wins at Opaki were worth J£l3O. J. Beckett and Mick McAuliffe stand disqualified for two years — or rather sixteen months since February last. Conqueror will not make another pa> - nient for the New Zealand Cup as he takes up stud duty in the Waimate district. Tarquin (9.13) is top weight in the Toorak Handicap, and his fonr-year-old full sister Pauline Louise (6 7) is at the Other end. Miss Delaval will race at the Auckland Racing Club's Spring Meeting, and therefore will not be a starter in the New Zealand Cup. Petroleum (Cadogan-Petroleuse), half brother to Hotchkiss would probably have ma.de a name for himself had he had any opportunities. Indian Shot's brother, Full Charge, who recently joined Mick Carmodys team at Caulfield, has gone wrong and been turned out. The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club has suspended Jim Redmond's jockey's license till the end of this month for misconduct at the Rangitikei meeting. The Wanganui totalisator turnover showed an increase of JE2063 and the Masterton totalisator J6754, compared with last year's spring meetings. Seahorse is engaged in the Caulfield Stakes, nine furlongs, on Saturday next, and the Eclipse Stakes, one mile and three furlongs, on the following Wednesday. The eleven-year-old Whakawatea and his three-year-old full brother, Peveril of the Peak, were among the competitors for the Scurry Stakes at Sydney City Tattersail's meeting on 22nd September. Mr Humphrey Oxenham has sold Pilot Boy and Syerla for iJ2OOO to Sir Edgar Vincent, who purchased Multiform and Screw Gun from Mr Stead. Mr Oxenham is on his way out to Melbourne to see the Cup ruu. He owns a four-year-old full brother to Syerla named Lygon. He started at 2 to 1 against in a field of twelve in a seven-furlong race at Sydney City Tattersall's Club meeting, but failed to get a place. Mark Thompson also trained the three-year-old full sister, who has been named Acrasia.
Multiform's sister, Formula, opened her winning career at Hastings. Fulmen is the only Dunedin representative engaged in the Auckland Cup. Renown's time in the Hawke's Bay Guineas beat that of Multiform and Seahorse by a tick. Nor'-west is in commission again, and has been entered for the Auckland Summer Steeplechase. The imported mare Simonias, by Situonian — Boyne, has produced a colt to Hotchkiss at Wellington Park. The Winter Meeting programme of the Wellington Racing Club corresponds exactly with last July's fixture. The latest owner of Ruamahunga is said to be Mr Ryder, of Otaki, who purchased the horse after the Masterton meeting. The Wellington Racing Club are giving i-11,160 in stakes this season, against J69709 last year, an increase of iJ1451. Although Nobility was withdrawn from his Wanganui and Hastings engagements, he continues to do work on the track. Paul Pry has started on eighty-two occasions, and finished twenty-six times first. His winnings amount to i! 7010. Bloomer, who has been a disappointment as a flat racer, has been tried over hurdles, and is said to shape satisfactorily. Ladykiller and Whirlwind, two of Stepniak's progeny, were successful at the Ohoka and Eyreton meeting on Thursday last. The Hutt-trained Ringlet got the 10 soys place money in the Juvenile Stakes at Hastings. Her stable mate (Dr. Bill) ran badly. Mr C. O'Connor, who acts as starter at the Akaroa, Ohoka, and other meetings in Canterbury, where Harry Piper cannot attend, has been appointed by the Dunedin Jockey Club. Cannie Chiel ran so badly at Wanganui that he was not taken on to Napier to contest the Guineas there. Sir George Clifford, E. Cutts, and the colt went South on Saturday last. Tndian Queen, winner of the Hastings Juvenile Stakes, is a good advertisement for the young Stepniaks. The third batch of Elderslie yearlings, to be offered at Riccarton next month, should bring fair prices. It would seem as though Bobadil is to be given a chance to redeem his character as a racer. After performing a light season at the stud, he is to go back to St. Albans to be trained for events at the back end. The Gaming Act Amendment Bill introduced by the Colonial Secretary will be passed in time for the Canterbury Jockey Club, assisted by the police, to deal with undesirable characters at the Jubilee meeting next month. Barley (dam of the A.J.C. Derby winner Malster), has produced a colt to Bill of Portland this season. The youngster in question is therefore full brother to Maltster. Mr Hordern undoubtedly secured a great bargain when he bought Barley. The programme of the Autumn Meeting of the Wellington Racing Club will be similar to that of last year, except that the Pacific Handicap, of 200 soys., six furlongs, will be for two and three year olds, instead of for the younger horses only, and a Hack Welter Handicap takes the place of the Farewell Handicap. The followipg is a list of the horses engaged in the Caulfield Stakes, to be run on the opening day of the V.A.T.C. Spring Meeting : — Seahorse, Lancaster, Carbinier, Paul Pry, La Carabine, Ranfurly, The Mariner, Kinglike, ReA enue, Cornquist, Contrast, Ampier, George Frederick, Merriwee, Wait-a-Bit, Gnnga Din, Dirk Hammerhand, Vocalist, Hautboy, Gauleon, Severity, Phillibeg, Barbarossa, Dandy, Tarquin, Mora, The Chief. Phaeton (Trenton — Sapphire), halfbrother to Bluefire, is making a name for himself at the stud. He claimed two winners at Ashburton and Geraldine last week. Clytie, a three-year-old filly by Phseton — Neroli, won the principal race each day. Clytie is inbred to Musket, being from Neroli, by Artillery. Phseton is the only Trenton horse in this colony, but they are plentiful enough in Australia. Moifa, by Natator — Denbigh, a halfbrother to Denbigh, opened his winning account at Waipawa. Denbigh's other progeny are Defoe, by Robinson Crusoe, 3 years ; Rhyl, by Somnus, 2 years, and Ruabon, by Mahaki, one year. I have been rather disappointed with the progeny of the good little Painter mare, but perhaps some of the abovementioned youngsters may turn out a cut above the ordinary.
