WELLINGTON v. TARANAKI. SPECIAL TO THE LANCE. HAWERA, Wednesday.
THE game Taranaki versus Wellington, at Hawera, was splendidly contested before a fine crowd of spectators, and ended in a victory for the visitors by nine points (three tries) to eight (two tries, one of which was converted). * * * Taranaki's first score was the result of a passing rush, Hunter crossing the line, Nicholas shortly after registering another try for his team, which was converted. * * • Then the visitors had an innings, Brodie going across the corner. * • * From the line in the centre field, McAnally broke away and made a pretty run, and the ball passed to OBrien, then to Calnan and finally to Woods, the latter beating two of his opponents by running round under the goal posts. * # * Iv the second spell the only score was a try by Claridge, who badly beat the opposing half. * • * The visitors had all the best of this half, but Taranaki's defence was very sound. * # • Howe played the best game of the tour, his work at full back being clean, and his kicking good. * # # Brodie was a tower of strength at three-quarters, but Bush has played many better games. * # * Wood did what he had to do well, but was not up to five-eight form. He does not seem to play with so much dash as in his usual place. « # • Kelly did an immense amount of work, stopping rushes well, but his passing was not too effective. * # * Claridge played his usual game, passj ing and stopping well. * * • The loose forward rushes were not understood by the local team, although at times the visitors kicked too hard, their opponents invariably taking the mark. * w # This was most noticeable in the first half, but improved in the second. * # * McAnally, Gallagher, OBrien, and Calnan were conspicuous for fine work, the two latter being penalised through off-side play. The Taranaki backs fielded and kicked brilliantly, Mynott being the shining star and the best back on the ground, Young ably assisting him with great dashes. Hunter passed sure and clean from half, and took his marks in good style. » # # Hargraves, at full back, did a lot of work, and made a good impression. He had the misfortune to be knocked out half way through the second spell. * » # Among the forwards, Walsh, Greig, and Esson were the best of a good pack. * * « The game was played in a good spirit, the referee's decisions being well accepted by both teams. * * # Angus Campbell, of Auckland, had charge of the whistle. » * * With this match, the tour ends, having one win, one loss, and one draw.
Madam Leperi, the clever scientific palmist, may be consulted at No. 1, Walter-street, by ladies only for a few days. She is well up in the art, having made it a lifelong study. As will be noticed by referring to advertising space allotted to R. Hannah and Co., they sound the last warning note re cheap boots and shoes. This is the last week in which high-class boots and shoes can be purchased (or, more correctly speaking, given a-vay) at less than half-price. An opportune ity like this will only occur once a year.
