New Zealand Colonist. TUESDAY, JUNE 13, 1843.

The tone which th e-Gazette has assumed in its two last numbers with respect to the New Zealand Company and its Agent, is a striking instance of the folly of'the course pursued by that body. That our contemporary, who has hitherto supported the mysterious, and no doubt profound, policy of Colonel Wakefield, should all at once, have visited his conduct with disapprobation, is so surprising, that we are almost tempted to believe that he must personally have felt the injustice of that policy, for we well know, with the poet — “ That the poor worm, when trod upon, will turn.” Whether such be the case or not, we cannot help congratulating the settlers of Port Nichol" son upon the sudden conversion of the learned Editor to our views. The partiality exhibited by Colonel Wakefield in the construction of roads has been more than once alluded, to by us; but when the Gazette reprobates that conduct in unmeasured terms, we cannot but consider it as the “ unkindest cut of all.” We can well imagine the lachrymose look of the gallant Colonel on reading that article, and the tone of deep despair with which he uttered Et tu, Brute ?
