We learn, on good authority, that H.M.S. Huzzar may be daily expected at this port direct from England. Coals. —It is said that a new bed of coals has been discovered on an allotment of land at Cornwallis in : Manakau, but we have not been able to ascertain whether the report is wellfounded. We have every reason to suppose, •from the character of the country in the neighbourhood of Manakau and Auckland, that coals must form a part of the mineral wealth of this • settlement. —Southern Cross. • Mechanics’ Institute; —The formation of a' “ Debating Class,” after the example of Sydney and other places, cannot fail to excite considerable interest. The subject for discussion on Thursday next, is likely to bring into > full play the powers of our colonial orators. Proper rules for the government of the Class have been adopted, and the name of the chairman is alone a sufficient guarantee that it will be well conducted. - Total Abstinence Society. —The Auckland Tee-totallers, who, some time ago, by their systematic course of “ agitation,” almost entirely engrossed public attention, are now reduced, by secessions of many principal members, to a very small nurnbey. tThe liberal contributions of the wealthy portion of our community have been expended in erecting the “ skeleton” of a “ Hall,” which stands a monument of the folly of the early managers of the Society. In the hey-day of its prosperity, obligations were incurred, towards the liquidation of which these “ breakers of the pledge,” now refuse to contribute. It is, however, to the credit of the few remaining members, that these debts are in course of gradua liquidation ; but it is, at the same time, a scandel to those who neglected to fiflfil their pledges. —Ackland Chronicle.
