WANGANUI.

On:Monday,fche£7th ult., the inhabitantsof Wanganui held ; a f6te in commemoration of the first arrival of Settlers with the Elisabeth. The sports consisted of rifle-shooting, boat-sailing, jumping in sacks, and the usual games in the mother country, which were gone through in a manner that reflected great credit both to managers and competitors. The day was fine, and the banks of the river, which were covered with 200 whites, and about 1,500 natives, presented a scene more imposing than was ever before witnessed in- this Settlement. Natives came from distant settlements up the river, to. view the sports of the Pakeha , and it was pleasing to remark the delight which beamed in every countenance as each game was being contested.

The Wanganui ,Settlers have been stigmatized as grumblers by one who. had it in his. power, and whose duty it was to remove, their just cause for grumbling ; .but though they ocr. casionally resent the neglect with which they have been treated, they cheerfully and unanimously join to commemorate the first acquisition of/Settlers to a, place .which will ere long acquire a high name in agricultural fame.
