REPUBLIC OF CHILI.
The following statistical information is taken from the Valparaiso almanac for 184*2. The amount of population must be regarded only as an approximation to the truth, as no regular census of the Republic has yet been undertaken by authority of the Chilian Government. The territory of Chili is divided into provinces, the provinces into departments, the departments into subdelegations, the subdelegations into districts. The Republic is governed by a President, who is the supreme head, the provinces by an Intendant, the departments by a civil Governor, the subdelegations by a subdelegate, and the districts by an Inspector. The chief town of each department has a municipality, of which the civil Governor is president. Each Intendant resides in the principal town of his respective province. The territory of the Republic is divided into nine provinces, namely, Coquimbo, Aconcagua, Santiago, Colchagua, Talca, Maule, Concepcion, Saldivia, and Chiloe. The provinces are divided into departments as follows, beginning in order with the last province above mentioned.
Chiloe, of which the chief town is San Carlos, or Anceed, is divided into ten departments, namely, San Carlos, Carelmapu, Chacao, Calbuco, Dalcahue, Quenac, Quinchao, Castro, Lemuy, and Conchi. Population 4 3,532 inhabitants.
Valdivia, the chief town of which is of the same name, contains three departments : Saldivia, Osorno, and Union. Population, 8,860 inhabitants.
Concepcion, the chief town of which is of the same name, is divided into eight departments, namely, Concepcion, Talcahuano, Puchacay, Rere, Laja, Lautaro, Coelemu, and Chilian. Population, 118,364 inhabitants. Maule, of which the chief town is Cauquenes, contains five departments, called Linares, Parral, San Carlos, Quirihue, and Cauquenes. Population 120,185 inhabitants. Talca, chief town of the same name, is divided into seventeen subdelegations. Population 67,310 inhabitants.
Colchagua, chief town San Fernando, contains three departments, namely, Curico, San Fernando, and Caupolican. Rengo is the chief town of this last department. Population 167,518 inhabitants.
Santiago, the chief town of the same name, which is also the capital of the Republic, contains six departments as follows, Rancagua, Victoria, Santiago, Relipilla, Casa Blanca, and Valparaiso. Besides the civil Governor, Valparaiso has also a military Governor, and general of the marine, who is commander of the troops of the line and the Militia, and superintendent of the revenue. In his triple capacity he has under his orders the troops of the gai - rison, the Marine, the Customs, the Resguardo* ancl the establishment of the captain of the Port. Occasionally he also discharges the duties of the civil Governor. Population 253,887 inhabitants.
Aconcagua , chief town the city of San Felipe, contains the six following departments, San Felipe, Audes, Putaendo, Quilloto, Ligue, and Petorca. Population 138,039 inhabitants. Coquimbo, of which the chief town is the city of Serena, contains eight departments, namely, Serena, Illapel, Combarbola, Ovalle, Elqui, Vallenar, Grelrina, and Copiapo. Population 99,841 inhabitants. Total .population of the Republic of Chili 1,017,336 inhabitants.
* The duties of the Resguardo are the same as those of the Tide waiters of the English Customs.
