RACES IN LYAL’S BAY.

December 7th. The town of Wellington was this day in an unusual state of excitement, in consequence of the long-talked-of match between Mr. Revans’ grey horse, Mazeppa, and Mr. G. Hunter’s bay mare, Temperance, having been announced to come off at the race course in Lyal’s Bay. The indifferent performance and condition of Mazeppa at the Petoni Races, induced many parties to back the mare, the odds all along being 5t04 on her. The knowing ones, however, stuck to the horse, which certainly looked a different animal. At twelve o’clock precisely, they both appeared on the course, and Mr. Virtue being appointed judge, the signal for starting was given for a Match of 25 Sov. H. F. One mile. Mr. Revans’ .... G. H. Mazeppa .. (Mr. Dorset) .. 1 Mr. G. Hunter’s..B. M. Temperance (Mr.Machattie) 2 , At starting the horse took the lead, and kept it throughout, winning easily by about 3 lengths. He was neatly handled by Mr. Dorset. The following matches were then got up by some of the sporting characters : Mr. Wakefield’s ch. g. Old Beau, against Mr. Virtue’s gr. g. Marksman, which was won by Marksman. Mr. Revan’s g. h. Mazeppa, against Mr. Bannister’s ch. g. Sulky. This was an exceedingly interesting race, and won by Mazeppa. Sulky at a distance from home looked the winner, but his temper on this, as on other occasions, told against him; he swerved close to the winning post, allowing the other horse to beat him by about a neck. Mr. Waitt’s br. m. Brown Bess was beat by Mr. Machattie’s b. g. Kangaroo.

Mr. Macliattie’s g. h. Whalebone beat Mazeppa easily, which was not to he wondered at, as he had ran two races before.

The day being exceedingly fine, there was a numerous attendance. We hope to see these sports continued* and understand that a match has already been made between Mr. Virtue’s Marksman, and Mr. Revans’ Mazeppa, to come off in about a forthnight.
