ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

To the Editor of the Neio Zealand Colonist. Sir, —By Tuesday’s number of your paper, I am happy to perceive that the discussion class of the Mechanics’ Institute is about re-commencing its labours. From the high attainments of the gentleman who opens the debate on Friday evening, we may expect that his subject, “The best means of improving the condition of the Maories,” will be handled in a masterly manner. The question is one deeply interesting to the whole of the Settlers in New Zealand, and on which a warm debate ought to arise : all who can put two sentences together, ought, from motives of interest or humanity, to say something on so important a question ; but as it frequently happens, that what is every one’s business is performed by none, it may arise, that each relying upon the other, the speakers may he few, and a tame debate take place. Should, however, such an improbability occur, the opening essay of Mr. Woodward will amply compensate all who take the trouble to attend* It is to he hoped that the spirit of perseverance and energy displayed by the young men who have hitherto composed the Discussion Class, will shame some of riper years into an active attendance, and make this Class one of the most useful and interesting evening pastimes in the Settlement. Your obedient Servant, FRANKLIN. Ist December 1842.
