OVERLAND MAIL FROM INDIA.
The following is a summary of the rules as respects letters for transmission by the overland mails, namely:—
Letters sent from Calcutta are liable to inland rates of postage only, provided they are for places within the United Kingdom of Great Britain, and not requiring to be delivered in Egypt or other intermediate places, to agents or others.
Letters for places in the United Kingdom of Great Britain, if directed to the care of agents or others at intermediate places, are chargeable with steam postage in addition to the inland rates.
Letters whose ulterior destinations being for Egypt, places in the Mediteranean, France, or any where out of Great Britain, are also chargeable with steam postage in addition to the inland rates.
No letters received by ship, nor generally, can be forwarded by the overland mails, unless the inland postage to Bombay .be previously paid at this office. i v No letter, packet, or newspaper, in excess of 12 Tolas weight, is receivable for transmission by the post in India; Note. —A Tola weight is equal to 180 grains troy. Inland rates of postage from Calcutta to Bombay : Rs. As. Up to £ tola weight.... 7 Above and not exceed-1 ing 1 tola weight J 14 Above 1 and not exceed- 1 ing 1|- tola weight J 15 Above tola and not "j exceeding 2 tola > weight J 1 12 And so on, adding 7 annas for every addi-tional'^-tola weight up to the maximum of 12 tolas. ' ‘ . Note. —An anna is 1 sixteenth ofrthe current Company’s rupee, and the Company’s rupee is generally estimated as equivalent to 2 shillings English money. Its value however, varies as operated npon by the exchange market. Steam postage rates when @ leviable iii addition to inland postage : Rs. As. Not exceeding f 1 tola weignt J 9 From fto tola weight . 1 1| to 2 1102 to 2i 2 And for every additional f- of a tola weight 9 annas to be added, up to the maximum of T2 tolas. Postage leviable on newspapers transmitted hy the overland mails from Calcutta : Annas. Up to 3£ tola weight 3 From to 6 6 From 6 to 9 9 From 9to 12 the maximum! 12 weight. /
