WHEREAS byan Ordinance enacted-by-the' Governor of New Zealand, with 'the advice and . ” , consent of: the Legislative Council, Session 2, Ijjfo. 2, entitled * ■ An Ordinance for establishing County Courts of Civil and Criminal Jdrisdiclion/.aiid fqr repealing an Ordinance for'instituting Courts of Requests, Session ly No. 6, and for repealing part of an Ordinance for establishing Courts ®f Quarter Session 1, No. 4, *.* It is, enacted that . His Excellency the Governor, with the advice of the Executive Council-,-shall from time to' time appoint a place or places, within each County or District, as the case may be, whereat County Courts of Civil and Criminal Jurisdiction shall be holden. Now, I, the Officer administering the: Government, with the advice of the Executive Conneil, do hereby direct and appoint, that for the purposes of the Said in part recited Ordinance, the Islands cff “New Munster” and “ New Leinster,” with the Islands adjacent, shall form a District, to be called the District of .Nelson. And I do hereby, with the like advice, direct and appoint that a County Court of Civil and Criminal Jurisdiction shall be holden monthly at Nelson, in the said District of Nelson. And that the first sitting of the said Court, shall be holden on the third Tuesday in the month of January, 1843. Colonial Secretary’s Office, Auckland, 14 September, 1842. HIS Excellency the Officer administering the Government, has been pleased to appoint William Hav* Esa., to be Harbour-Master at Wellington. This appointment dates from the 11th day of August, 1842. By Command, (For the Colonial Secretary),. JAMES STUART FREEMAN, —,—o—- * We publish the following extracts from the Municipal Corporation Ordinance for the information of Burgesses intending to vote on the ensuing election. '/'.The election of the eighteen candidates for the office of Alderman shall be conducted in tile mariner following—
' Every Burgess may vote for any number of persons, not exceeding the number then to be chosen, by delivering to the Returning Officer a voting paper containing the Christian name’s and the surnames of the persons for whom he votes, with their respective places of abode, and description, such paper being signed with the name of the Burgess so voting, . and setting his place of abode and description.. ♦The voting shall commence at nine of the clock in the forenoon, and shall finally close at four of the clock in the afternoon of the same day. No enquiry shall be permitted at any election, as to the right of any person to vote, except only as follows:—that is to say, that the returning officer shall, if required by any two Burgesses, put to, any voter, at the time of his delivering in of his voting paper, and not afterwards, the following question's, or either of them and no other: — , 1. Are you the person whose name is signed as “A. B.” to the Voting Paper : now delivered in by you ? 2. Are you the person whose name appears as “ A. B.” on the Burgess Roll now' in force for this Borough ? . And no person required to answer either of the said questions, shall be permitted to vote until he shall have answered the same.
If. any person shall vvilfiilly make a false answer .to either of the questions aforesaid, he shall. be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor. At the close of the Election, the Returning Officer shall ascertain the number, of votes given for every person whose name shall appear upon the Voting Papers, and so many of such persons being equal to the number of persons then to be chosen, as shall have the greatest number of votes, shall be deemed to be elected.
