SOUTHERN NEWS.
We have received the first number of the Lyttelton Chronicle and Peninsula News. It is to be published three times weekly. There has been a destructive fire in Dunedin, Otago. The buildings destroyed were : —U Henry and Co., ironmongers and ship chandlers; N. Demand (late Perrimaii’s) produce merchant; Robson and Preaver, tailors and clothiers; J. Dollar, baker and confectioner; M‘Rac*s Telegraph Hotel; E. Barnes, draper. No accident of any serious nature occurred. Several pc sons were bruised and slightly burned in attempting to save property, but none were seriously injured- Otago Witness. The OLitiki rush continues, but evidence appears wanting as to the real value of the gold-field. The trial of Captain Jarvey on the charge of poisoning his wife was occupying a good deal of public attention at Dunedin at the time the mail left. The following state of the poll tor the election of the Superintendent of Wellington is announced by the Evening Post of the 25tfa :
