Monthly, Maritime and Military Record.

We have had but one ship from England,—lhe African,— since our li.it ; but the Matilda Wattenbach and Hanover, now ninty-six days from Deal, with the first and head quarter division of the Nonconformiits settlers, may be hourly looked for. An address of welcome, which is in the course of signature, has bwn prepared, and there can be no doubt that their reception will be kind, cordial, and whorlhy of those with whom they come to cast their lot. After a considerable interval, we have a pennant In the Waitemata once mote. H.M.S.S. Harrier, 17 guns, Captain Sit Malcolm MacGiegor, Dart., (recently made post, and about to be relieved by Commander I<\ W. Sullivan,) came In Id harbour from Wellington on Tuesday. Her visit here will be brief, and the trip, we believe, may be regarded as a cruise of exercise. Sir Malcolm MacGregor's is the second instance of proroot ion to post rank on this station, Captain Klyn having been not long since relieved frorp command of the Miranda under like auspicious circumstance.'. Commodore Burnett has not yet visited thin station, H. M. ship Orpheus, under his command, having conveyed the Governor (iencral of Aiutialin, Sir John Young, to Cape York. Is ii to Governors of New Zealand only that the services of ships of war are to be denied ? and is it under circumstances of unusual emergency and difficulty, the result of imperial dictation and mismanagement that the youngest, but not least promising of [England's colonics is to be cavalierly told " if you require the services of a ship of war you must buy one and man and maintain her at your own expanse?" It ll not very gencrou3 and it is certainly very unjust of England to diag us into war by means of the incompetency of the rulers she saddles us with, and then when she does put the right man in the right place to cripple his movements, nay to run the rj»k of stultifying the entire object of his mission, ihrough withholding the mean* of ready and rapid locomotion. As Vfj have more than once remarked, it would he both a graceful and a politic act / were the Hritish Government to send out a snail but powerful dispatch gunboat fur exclusive service in New Zealand. Arm, equip her, and place commissioned and petty officers on board, let her be at the absolute disposal of the Governor of New Zealand, and then, if the Colony mutt pay for the services of a ship of war, her refit, her maintenance in effective condition, the pay and provisioning her crew would be much more reasonable and less a matter of arbitrary enaction than that which the Duke of Newcastle has inculcated. There has been no alteration in the disposition of the troop*. The detachment of the IL'th, head quarters of the 14th. 65th, and 7Dth, still remain encamped at Otahuho; the -tilth are in gar risen in Auckland; the head quarters of thes?th at New Ply. mouth i and a large detachment of that regimental Wanganu., in command of Major 1.0ga... Col. Sir James Alexander returned to Km.-Hml by the lust unoh having taken leave of hi-. regiment, by who,,, he was greatly and deservedly beloved, 111 a way thai will not soon tw forgotten by either officers Of lOtttten. Sir James, wo are toltl, Ii to bo lUCCeod>l| In com-

mund of the 2nd battalion of the 14ih by Lieut.-Colonel Charles Wilson Austen, from the 03rd regiment. Several promotions have lttely taken place—Major Nelson, 4'kh, and Major Hutchins, Ist battalion 12th, to Lieut.-Cnlo-ncb; Captain Miller, Ist battalion 12th, Captain Dowdier, 40th, Captains Faul and Turner, 65lbj Captain Strover, llnyal Artillery, and Captain Mould, Royal Engineers, io be Majors. Wc should have been glad to have been seen the name of Captain MacCiregor of the 65th included in this list of promotion*; indeed, it seems strange, considering his services, how this gallant and deserving officer has been overlooked. The Companionship.of the Bath has been awarded to Colonel T. It. Mould, Royal Engineers; Colonel A. F. W. Wyatt, 05rh; Lieut.-Colonel A. Leslie, 40th; and Lleut.-Colonel Carey, half pay 50th Regiment, Deputy Adjutant-General to the Forces in Australia The good ship African, Captain Gibson, which was signalled shortly after 11 u.tn., arrived in harbour on Wednesday about 4 p.m., after a remarkably pleasant passage of a hundred and seven days from the Downs, whence she took her departure on the 12th May ; had fine weather down Channel, and landed her pilot at Plymouth, on the 15th; passed within sight of Madeira on the 86th n:l, on the 2i)th, caught a moderate and fine N.E. trade, in 27 ° N. latitude, 20 ° 43' VV. longitude, carrying it to s°!)' N., having passed inside, or to lite eastward of the Cape de Verd islands. Crossed the Equator on the 13th June (thirty two days from the Downs), in 23 °9' W. longitude; having, in .17' N., spoken the ship Ellenborougl), 70 days from Calcutta, with troops, bound to Falmouth for orders. Got the S.E. trade on the line, after a brief detention of two days, and carried it a* far as 2(i° 23' S, latitude, 31 c 14' \V. longi'ude. Passed the meridian of the Cape of flood Hope, in latitude 37 = 34' S., on the 13th July ; sighting a ship with main-topmast gone, standing to the westward. Han down her longitude between the parallels of 30° and 41 ° .S., with fine steady westetly winds prevailing. Ily the courtesy of the Chief Officer, we have been enabled to make the following notes of this pan of the passage; and we have been led to do so because of the prevalence of easterly weather reported, not only by ships arrived heie, hut in Melbourne and Sydney likewise. Oii the 3rd August, in latitude 30 ° 22' S., longitude 00° 13' E.', experienced light easterly weather, with the wind ranging from S. to E. August 4th—light winds from E. to N.E. August sth—puffy, with rain, weather unsettled. August oth—.viud from N.E. to N. during the first twelve hours; from N. to N. W. during the last twelve; latitude 41 ° 30' S„ longitude 103° 38' E. August 7th—wind N.W. to W.N.W., hazy, with tain. August Hth—wind W.V.W., heavy passing squalls with rain; similir winds and weather up to the 12th August, when it became finer, wind at W, August 15th—blowing haul from the S.W., with heavy passing squall*, accompanied with hail and snow; lititude 44 °3' S., longitude 132°,jJ' E. On the 10th August, sighted the south-west Cape of Tasmania, at noon, distant about eighteen mil--. On the 17lb, took departure from Tas nan's Head, bearing N. W. by W„ distant eighteen miles; had a splendid run of nine days from thence, fetching Cape Maria Van Diemeu on Monday, the 2.">ih, at noon ; rounding the North Cape at 0 p.m.; passing Cape Brett at 7 11.in. of the 20th; the lien and Chickens at 2 p.m. ; Gowan's point and the rocks at 7*30 p.m. ; Tin Tiri at 9*15 p.m., and anchored at midnight. This is the third voyage of the African to ibis port; as usual she comes iulo harbour 111 first rate order. She has had an agreeable passage, no sickness, one birth, and bring an addition to our population of some hundred and five souls. !wo seamen fell overboird, one from the rigging, the other from a siage over the side, at different times of the passage ; both, however, were providentially picked up.—New-Zealander, August 311.

The good ship Messina, Captain Lethbri Ige, is once more all a canto, ami will drop down harbour this morning preparatory to her departure for Callao. It will be In the recollection of our readers that the Messina arrived in this harbour after a passage, made in a masterly and plucky manner, from near the latitude of Madeira, with mainmast entirely gone at the head, maintopmast only held aloft by means of spare spars, guys, and preventer stays, and with a foremast, if not complaining, in very far from a healthy state; yet still, sorely crippled as she was, she achieved her run from the meridian of the Cape of Good Hope to Auckland in fifty days. It is hut a simple act of justice to Captain Lethbridge to rechronicln the e facts, and to make honourable mention of the energy and industry he has exhibited in shifting his old fore and mainmasts, replacing them with fine new kauri spar*, stripping his rigging fore and aft, and getting his ship ready for sea in a most complete and efficient manner. It affords us a very sincere pleasure to record these fact*, and we heartily hope that the zeal of Captain Lethbridge, his officers and ship's company, will be dulv Appreciated by those in whose service they ha« - e so manfully exerted themselves.

The Boat Building Trade is very active just now, not less than four vessels are on the slocks on the North Shore alone. Messrs Holmes launched on Saturday last, their first craft, a cargo boat for Messrs. Harris & Wadham. She measures 35 feet keel, 13 feet 2 inches heim, and 4 feet in hold, and will consequently carry about -■'> ton". This little vessel h.s been built in the shirt space of six weeks, which, considering the unfavourable weather, is very creditable to her builders. She is considered a handsome boat and her carrying qualities are highly spoken of. The same firm hive just laid the keel of another boat of the same class f,ir Mr. George Clarke, and the keel of a large cutter for Mr. (.'. J. Stone, lo he employed m the service of the VVaihoihoi Coil Company in the ManukaU.

Mr. Beddoes has also a cutter nearly ready for the water. She is owned by Messrs. Harris & Wadham and is destined wo believe for the Coromandel Trade. A cargo boat tor the same firm by Mr. Brown of Wahapu, is also in course of construction. TIIK WHALSHS. —The barque Minerva. 291 tons, New Bedford. These elements are in active motion at the present moment; as far as the inter-colonial branches are concerned, a complete see-svv between the rumoured attractions of a new auriferous discovery on the Clutha at Otago ami tho slow but progressive developments of the quartz deposits of Coromandel appear to be the more alluring. \ few weeks hence the respective merits of both will be more defined, when fine weather sets in, and the machinery, now on the way hither, shall be at work. There have four foreign arrivals of 1411 tons, one from the Mauritius) via Sydney, one from Sydney, one from London, and one from the South seas, with 183 passengers. There were eight departures of 3025 tons—two for Guam, two for Sydney, two for the South seas, and two for Callao—with 63 passengers. There were nineteen arrivals of 2605 tons with 200 passengers, from the other Provinces of Now Zealand; and eleven departures of 1265 tons, with 144 passengers. The balance in favour of immigration consequently amounts to 256 soul'. ARRIVALS FROM POUTS OK THE PROVINCE OF AUCKLAND. A very large share of passenger tralfic has set in between Auckland and Coromandel ; and now, with the prospect of summer weather at hand, after a winter of continuous rain such as has never before been experienced, and with the additional facilities of steam communication, for which provision is being made, the intercourse between the two ports cannot fail to be extensive and constant. There have been (ill arrivals of 1830 tons with 296 passengers, 5129 bshl*. wheat, 27f12d0. maire, 1011 do.apples, 150 kits liumeras, !.'){tons potatoes, flcwr. onions, llilcwt. bacon ami hams, 6KO cwt. salt pork, 2 cwt. f il, 5 cwt. salt beef, 5 cwt. bones, 3057 Ihs. lard, 17«>7 Ih"- butter, 4(811 lbs. cheese, 1420 Ihs. honey. 300 lbs. wool, II!) dozen ee,g;, I horse, b'4 head cattle, 128 pigs, 55 fowls, 33 tons kauri gum, "> tons towai hark, 2 tuns black oil, 21 tuns sperm oil, 122 dozen smoked fl»h, 12 cases jams, 1 hide, 1 boar. QTJ It is necessary to repeat that these are merely the morprominent articles coming coastwise, 'The entries are not come plete, as many native vessels and small licensed craft, evade making any entries, And further, very large quantities of produce—by far the greatest proportion of sawn timber for example—are received by boats and carts from creeks and stations within the limits of the Auckland district, exclusive of those brought to market in native canons, or back-borne by those industrious purveyors to European wants. —Of lawn timber, shingles, posts ami rail*-, palings, house blocks, firewood, and oilier lumber, of which there is a very large, importation coastwise, we can give no account, these being no longer entered at the Customs, but in cargo books supplied to such trading vessels.
