OUR EXPECTED VISITORS.
To the Editor of the New-Zealander. Sir, —la the course of the following month we expect the arrival from England of a large number of our fellow countrymen, and daring that and> the few subsequent months, we shall probably have a considerable addition made to our population through the influence of our gold-fields. But where, I would ask, are they, or the majority of them, to find lodging accommodation in Auckland? Are they to be compelled to resort to the public house, whether they like it or not, and to be forced to countenance a principle which many of them believe to be pernicious? I have been informed that amongst the expected Non-conformists, will be found many who are habitual abstainers from alcoholic drinks ; and, should such be the case, will it not be injudicious to force them to take up their abode in establishments—however respectably conducted they may be—which they have been taught to look upon as evils to society, and which by the nature of their pledge, they are bound to discountenance. I would recommend that one or two “ Temperance Hotels’’ be opened in this city, where those comforts of a home may be found which will harmonize with our visitors, previous experienced and settled conviction of mind. Arrangements of this kind will tend to ameliorate the effects that will naturally flow from the important change they have already commenced, and which will find its consummation on the shores of this Province. I have, &a, A Total Abstainer. Auckland, August 18th.
