SONG.—DAUGHTER OF ERIN. Daughter of Erin ! whose hair like night clouds, Eyes like blue heavens enshrin’d in the sea, Speak of thy country, whose dark robe of grief shrouds All that bright sunshine which yet it shall see. Daughter of Erin! though in thy smiling Lurk the soft sweetness of flower and bee, I should be only thy nature defiling, If for that sweet smile alone I loved thee. Daughter of Erin! though beauty is lying In the pure outliue of figure and face, If for that beauty alone I were sighing, Soon would another thine image deface. Daughter of Erin! the lake that thou knowest Does not more truthfully picture its shore Than every smile, every blush that thou showest Mirrors thy soul —’tis that soul I adore!
