To the Editor of the Nkw Zealander. Sir, — In the Southern Cross of the 13th Oct., the Rev. Mr. Hamer publishes certain strictures upon the present movement against intemperance. With his arguments I meddle not —hut the assertions contained in the following passages from those strictures cannot be allowed to pass without notice :—• 1. “The Auckland League of Temperance is now launched. Not however upon the principle originally understood.” 2. “ The principle of the League is ‘the prohibition by law of the sale of intoxicating drinks.’ As Secretary for the Provisional Committee I affirm that the principle was limited in its meaning and application to public houses, 't he Preliminary Meetings and the th stJGeneral Meeting of the League went no farther than the principle thus understood. This T elicited most distinctly at our first meeting, and on this understanding co-operated with the League.” 3. “ I affirm most solemnly that the League lifts not kep‘ faith with its originally understood intentions.” As Chairman ofthe Preliminary Meetings, and as a member of (he Committee appointed to prepare the Resolutions for the Public Meeting, I affirm that Mr. Hamer has entirely misapprehended the object of those meetings, and I may add that with the exception of Mr. flamer, I am not at present aware of a single individual amongst the persons who attended those meeting, who understood that the principle ofthe League was limited in its meaning and application to public houses. I am, &c. Arch. Clark. Auckland, 23rd October, 1854.
