DEATH BY ACCIDENT.—CORONERS INQUEST.
On Tuesday last an Inquest was held at the Rus sell Wine Vaults, Shortland-street, before Dr. Davies, Coroner, on the body of Thomas Gavin' a Pensioner of the Howiek Division, whose melancholy death was reported in our last. It appeared from the evidence that the deceased and another man named Bernard Tierney were excavating for the foundation of a house in Shortland street, and had considerably undermined the embankment. While their backs were turned, and they were engaged loading the last cart for the day, the bank suddenly fell, covering the deceased and partially covering Tierney. The carter who was standing by gave the alarm, and many persons hastened to render aid. In a short time Tierney was taken out, having sustained comparatively little injury ; but nearly a quar.er of an hour elapsed before the earth was lemqved from the unfortunate decease!, and it was then found that he was quite dead. A verdict of Ac - cidental Dcatli was returned.
