Fatal Occurrence. —An accident of a very melancholy and fatal character, "c icgiet to state, took place in Shortland Street, on Monday afternoon. AVhilst two men, named Ihomas Gavin, and Bernard Tierny. were engaged in excavating the ground for the erection of a new store, opposite to the premises of the late Mr. Wellesley Hughes, the bank which had been partly undermined, and which had become swollen by the rain that had fallen, suddenly gave way and burled the poor fellows underneath it. Gavin was completely covered, and only the head of Tierney was left exposed. Every exertion was made, to extricate the suttcieis , unfortunately in Gavin’s case without success, as he was quite dead by the time he was dug out. Tierney was conveyed in a state of insensibility to the shop of Dr. Matthews, where after soino time, through the attentions of that gentleman, and the Rev. G. A. Purchas, he was sufficiently restored as to admit of his being conveyed home. We lament to say that Gavin has left a wife and several cluldren wholly unprovided lor.
