ESTA T E S ON THE THAMES. Extract from “Auckland and its Neiohuouriiood”—(a work of which large editions have been sold in London, and in the neighbouring Colonies, and of acknowledged truthfulness of detail): — tc A few miles still further to the Eastward, you reach the Southern extremity ot the Gulf bounded by the Plain, or V alley of tiu; Thames. This Plain is upwards of sixty miles in length, by about sixteen or twenty miles in breadth ; and is watered throughout its whole extent by two winding rivers —“ The Thames” and “ the Piako.” Both Rivers are navigable for barges or Small Steamers for a distance of 50 miles at least, and arc accessible from Auckland by canoes or open boats in line weather. With its numerous harbours, estuaries, rivers, islands, forests, ami plains, the Gulf of the Thames comprises a commercial world in miniature.” 11 Into this river wc entered, and within three miles found the water perfectly fresh ; wc proceeded up the river fourteen miles. The river at this height is as broad as the Thames at Greenwich ; it has water enough for vessels of more than the middle size, and a bottom of mud so soft that nothing could take damage by running ashore.”— Captain Cook.
