Present:—The Chairman, Messrs. Kelly, Finlay, Somerville, and Williamson. The Commit received a petition from Mrs. Graham to keep a lodging house, which was read. Also a request from Mr. Bourne to be permitted, as heretofore, to make coke for a short period longer. I he City Surveyor presented various reports. On the motion of Mr. Kelly, seconded by Mr. Finlay, it was resolved that the Resident Magistrate he furnished with copies of the City By-laws lor distribution amongst the armed I ‘dice. On the motion of Mr. Finlay, seconded by Mr. Kelly, a letter was desired to be written requesting the Superintendent to place £ 1000 (of the lands voted Lv tiie I rovincial Council) tj the credit of the Council, in the Union Bank of Australia A letter of the Clerk was read, praying the Council to take the price of provisions, ic., and his salary into consideration. Referred to a Committee. Various instructions were ordered to be furnished t • the Inspector of Nuisances. 'flie market rules were ordered to be printed and posted in the market place. The Council went into Committee to consider the Surveyor’s Report, Mr. Bourao s letter, and Mrs. Graham’s petition. Monday, July 31st, 1824. ITcscut I The Chairman. Messrs. Kelly, Vaile, Williamson, and Somerville. Several letters were presented and read: two from his honour the Supcri-tendent. The first granting permission to enclose the lower part ot the market reserve, ihe other placing a see .ml instalment of o e thousand pounds (money voted for the City by the Provincial t ouncil) at the disposal ot the Council. _ One from the Resident Magistrate, ackn wdedgmg receipts of copies of By-laws, and intimating his desire to co-operutc with the Council is ear.ring those laws into effect. Another from Messrs. Owen and Bell requesting the Council to give order for the removal of the.shcd e e'tod bv the Harbour Commissioners. Another letter, also, hum Air- Robertson, calling the attention o: the Council to the state of the covering on the s. wer in Queen-street opposite his shop. The Citv Surveyor made various reports, —with respect to the carters having transferred the traffic from the high read to the side paths in p rt of Waterloo Quadrant and Symejid’s-street,—re. p 'cting certain repairs in Queen-street, —rent for market Louse, &c. The Inspector of Nuisances reported that natives were iu the habit of smoki"g and making fires contiguous to the market house, pointing out the danger of the same, The By-laws to make certain provision in respect of lires were then read, after which, it was moved byMr. W illiamson. and seconded by Mr. Kelly That the By Law- to make certain previa: >n hi resj ec! of fires in the City of Aucklai.d be now passed, and that the Chairman do present the san e to his honour the Superintendent for his approval and f>r publication i • the Government Gazette. Carrie;!. The Bv Law was signed and scaled. The Council then went into Committee on the Surveyor’s report, when it was resolved that the Surveyor cause the necessary repairs in Qneen-strei t to be effected, and that the attention of the Commssioncr of Police be directed to the pr -tectum of the footpaths in conformity with the Ordinance. Arcs; Messrs. Somerville and Williamson. Noes: Messrs. Kelly, and Vaile. The resolution was allirincd by the casting vote of the Chairman.
It was agreed that the Surveyor he instructed to i aspect the bridge over the open sewer on the passage o’ Durham Street and report on the same at the next meeting of Council. The Clerk presented sundry accounts which were passed, and was instructed to charge Gd. a copy for the City By Laws. Council adjourned until Monday. Monday, August 7th, 1054. Present: The Chairman, Messrs. Kelly, Vaile, Finlay, Somerville, and Williamson. After the minutes of the last meeting had been read and continued, The Surveyor reported that the expense of erecting a pipe over die stream in Durham-strcct similar to that in Wvndham-strect would he about 6 SI. 14s.
The repairs of the liridge in Upper Queen-street, he estimated would cost 10/. halt ot which the inhabitants were willing to pat'. On the motion of Mr. Kelly the Surveyor was ordered to have the work performed. The inhabitants of Vulcan l ane were willing to 1 av 10/ in part payment of repairing the same. The Inspector of Nuisa ccs reported that he hid ser.cd several notices daring the past week to Bakers and Blacksmiths calling upon them to raise their chimnies &c., agreeably to the City By laws ; that, several chimnies had taken fire during tha same period, and that he had laid an .1 f< rma ion against William Bray for furious riding through the streets
A letter from Mr. D. .Crosbie, (3rd August) was read stating that his chimney had caught fire that morning, forwarding, at the same time, a receipt to show that i bad been swept within the last 21 dry!.
The Council went into committee on the Surveyor's Keport. It was agreed that Messrs. Finlay, Kelly, and Yaile form n committee to examine and report upon the intended I'.ridge in Durham-strcet, the repairs of the bridge in Upper Queen-street, and the repairs of Vulcan l.ane.
On the motion of Mr. Williamson, it was agreed that the Surveyor be instructed to examine the bridpc a r the foot of Wvndhara-strcet, in company with the Chairman, Messrs. Finlay and Vaile, to report as to whether tic work lias been executed according to the plan and specification approved by ibis Council on the 24th April 1554. The Clerk presented several accounts which were passed and ordered to be paid. , iMr. Finlav handed in the Kcpoit of a Select Committee appointed on the 21th July, and moved that it be read. The report was as follows: <• The Committee appointed to examine and report on the City Clerk’s applicath n for an advance of salary,(after* having considered the great advance which ha-s taken place iu prices since he entered upon ih: duties of his office, and duly recognising the industrious and satisfactory manner in which he has fulfilled his duties, and, at the same time with a lew to economy, do recommend that the salary of that officer be ‘ advanced to the rate of 1501. per annum commencing from tbe date of bis applicant n.” On the motion of Mr. Williamson ihc Keport was adopted, and the Council adjourned until Monday August 11th,
